It takes courage, but I fin-— ally left the snaw. With my no- madic life, however, I’ve learned toa add "today" to all bald state— ments about my whereabouts. So....-today, I see no snow. Taday I sit at my computer, inside a tastefully updated lag home, perched solidly on a rocky Point which juts aut into the Pacific between Nanaime and Lady-— smith. My life in Boat Harbour revolves around nature, weather and people from various parts of the world. Boat Harbour’s Cap- tain, Julian, does everything from retying the lines of boats belonging .to,landlubbers to-seri—- er Are -ence and ~ OUS sea rescues ta delivering tons af groceries to a monstrous vessel anchored offshore. I try to help and support him while he skillfully undertakes these rolls. My help often cansists of making certain the demestic af-— fairs of ow life are tended. Many o}d friends in Cassiar may not believe that I actually cock meals and bake cookies and pies — coveted by the usually gentle Captain. I theught I came here far a bit of FB & R, As the main tele- Phone system and radia oaperatian are lacated in the kitchen, I can be found with a wooden spoon in one hand, the radio’s mouthpiece in the other, while the phone is tucked in my neck. Then sameone shouts a hearty hello fram the dacr. Isn’t it a blessing that I gained confidence operating radi-— os while I was with the School District? Special thanks ta Lorne Armstrong who answered a myriad of questions and let me DO TT sa IT could learn. Juiitan used te voander abcut my sanity whenever I left the Coast. IT wondered once: my ar— Fivel in Cassiar. The bus pulled into town at 1:30 a.m., my lug- gage had gone astray, Feith Lan— phear had given me one name (Ferns with nao phone number, and Me oone was there ta meet me. I cherish all memories I carry fram Cassiar. I’ve lived in a variety af Llecatioans in Can- ada and no other place has left me with sa much. When I feel I can be af some use in my current cammunity, it’s dene with a chunk af thanks to the Cassiarites who taught me abeaut giving.
