over The EDGE age |4 Your 2 Cents by: Calais Question one- Why when you buy a book for a class, do you have to buy a revised. edition for the next year and ... Why does it cost so much more when only a few things are changed? Question two-How much in the world has actually changed so dramatically in one year, that all the text books in the world need to be revised? These are my questions for this edition. HALLOWEEN COSTUME NIGHT SO GET DRESSED UP AND COME ON DOWN! And Now for Some- thing About Jugging by Kierin Mackenzie Jugging comes from a cult movie classic, The Blood of Heroes. This gem was made in 1988, in Australia and stars Rutger Hauer, and Joan Chen. It is set in a post-apocalyptic world, and is quite entertaining. The theme element which the movie revolves around is a sport called Jugging. The sport is fast, hard, and simple. Jugging at this school will try to stay as close to the original feel and action of the sport, but keep it as safe as possible for the participants. The Rules of Jugging are simple. Only the Quick may touch the dog’s skull, (We’ll Probably be using a Coke Bottle with a hole cut out of the side) and the Quick has to get the dog’s skull on the opposite team’s stake. As soon as this happens, the game is over, and the party begins. Time is kept by throwing stones at a piece of metal, making a clank- ing sound. As soon as the first stone is thrown, the Quicks charge into the circle, to try and grab the dog’s skull. Each period lasts 100 stones, and play can go up to three periods long. There are five positions on each team. First, of course is the Quick. Then there is the Slash, who is armed with a stick with a sort of hook at the end. This is to pull other people down and out of the way. The Drive, and the Backcharge are armed with sticks with large pads at the end. Their job is to pin people, and clear a path so the Quick can makea good run. Lastly is the Hook. A Hook will be armed in our version with a stick, and with another stick on a swivel, so it may rotate. The Hook’s job is to Protect the Quick. All the sticks will be made of heavily padded rattan, and everyone will wear armor. Eye protection will be manda- tory, as will, in all likelihood, mouth guards. Cups and such will be highly encouraged. 4 Jugging is for women and men alike, as well as younger and older people. The Saga by Jason Curby: Do you realize that most people use only two per- cent of their mind’s potential? Me: That much, huh? Curby: Seriously. Why not improve that? Me: You’ ve got this old Vauxhall floored going up this hill. If I used any more of my brain at university, my cerebral cortex would seize up like this motor’s going to. Curby: You’re so left-brain. Your so rational, logical, critical. Every once in a while you’ ve got to kick back and let the images flow. Let the right-side of your brain take over and see patterns, see how thins are connected. Me: Right. Curby: For my English 270 assign ments, I use the Learning Skills Center’s “clustering” all the time now. With the key word in the middle of the page and all my brainstorms branching out from it, I create a picture of my ideas —I tap the right side of my brain, get that little creative edge. Me: Over the Edge. I thought you were a scientist, not an artist. Curby: As my uncle Marcel Proust used to say, “Listen, you young first-year student. You don’t receive wisdom. You must discover if for yourself after a journey that no one can take for you or spare you.” Me: The journey this morning is one I could have been spared —but I guess it beats walking up the hill when it’s freezing.
