Had it not been that the marines remained loyal, we would all have been disposed of and thrown to the sharks. As it is, we have already hanged three men whom you will see if you turn your spy- glass on our yards, and there are ten or fifteen men who will be taken home in irons. It was fortunate that we met you.” The marines and the bo’sun then picked up about a dozen of us, and we were lowered into a cutter. Our stay in the sunlight was very brief, for no sooner were we on the naval vessel than we were taken to the ship’s brig, and there again I performed my duties. This time, I held a huge hulk of a man with heavy beard and gold rings in his ears. His language was as awesome as his appearance, and even my iron constitution revolted. Days went by. The temper of the men in the brig did not improve. Their rations were a little salted pork and some bread, “with a peculiar brew that passed for tea. One day my charge was in particularly vil- lainous mood, and as a marine brought in the rations, he rose to his full height, shout- ing “Ye traitor to yer shipmates”’, and brought his manacled hands down on the marine’s neck. There was a loud snap, and a uniform with what had once been a man sank slowly to the deck. A hush, then a file of marines with fixed bayonets. Again I saw the light of day for a short time on the quarter deck before a group of grave faced officers. Minutes later I found myself gently swinging in the breeze high up in the rigging, with all the ship’s company looking up, including t he other occupants of the brig. “Cut him down” rang through the ship, and I found myself lowered to the deck. The armourer, a canny fellow, thought me too valuable to be used as a sinker, so again the rivets were punched out, and my late charge became the centre of a group of fighting sharks. The rest of our trip was uneventful. After a short stay in port we were again commissioned, and for the next few years Fully Licensed Telephone 676 Commercial Hotel Harry E.
