to the game and fish and forest trails of what is considered the most beautiful section of Canada and one of the most fascinating spots in the world. Here in British Columbia we have an abundance of game. We have moose, deer, Game Commissioner Frank R. Butler bear, wapiti, mountain sheep and goat, cari- bou, wolves and cougar. There are sufficient fish of varied varieties in the silver streams here to satisfy even the most fastidious angler and any fisherman seeking real sport is recommended to try out the rivers which flow through our forests or circle our mountains. Bic GAME Easy TO FIND In very few cases is it necessary to trek far from a railroad or highway to encounter the finest of game. Of course, there are many spots more remote where the adventurous hunters wish to track down the elusive goat or sheep, but even then there are mountain trails which add a zest to the hunt and bring out the real thrill of closing in on a quarry that is determined to give the hunter a run for his money. Page Ninety-six Constantly on the alert to prevent viola- tions of either game or fish laws, patrols are carried out across the hills and through the forests in all kinds of weather and under the most trying conditions. Pit-lamping, which some years ago was prevalent in certain sections, has been almost entirely wiped out but there are still some districts where the Game Warden must be on the alert against this nefarious practice. Certain large areas are difficult to cover but, as far as possible, this practice is being brought under control. Glancing through the annual report issued by the Provincial Game Commission, a person can easily acquire a knowledge of the work being done by this department and can readily appreciate the labor involved in maintaining across the huge expanse of brush and water the lures which attract thousands to British Columbia year after year. Here are some excerpts from that well- written volume: “Moose are still increasing east of the Kootenay and Columbia Rivers from the International Boundary to the Canoe River. “There are also a good number of moose on the west side of the rivers mentioned, but not in such large numbers. “Mountain goat—Very plentiful throughout the Division, with the exception of the Boundary country, where they are protected. “Grizzly are fairly plentiful throughout the unsettled parts of this Division and black and brown bears are plentiful and created considerable trouble in orchards during the past summer.” Above excerpts are from the reports sub- mitted by A. F. Sinclair, Officer Command- ing ~B” Division, which takes in the Kootenay and Boundary Districts. From R. M. Robertson, Officer Com- manding “C” Division, Kamloops, Yale, Okanagan, Cariboo and Chilcotin, the re- Game Commissioner James G. Cunningham port is enough to gladden the heart of any big game hunter. He tells of moose that are prolific as ever, of plenty of deer, loads of black bear, an adequate supply of wapiti, many fine moun- tain sheep and thousands of mallards. Mr. Robertson touches on the fur trade, trapping lines, co-operation of residents and generally gives an excellent report of the manner in which he follows out his tasks and the satisfaction derived from the work he performs.
