TASATHA LUNDHOLM Arrs Epiror ano Aos MANAGER So you know when you’re sitting in class, and you can hear someone’s phone vibrate, even across the classroom? It’s pretty common for all of us. I mean, at least once a day that happens, if not once a class. When you hear the phone go off, you automatic- ally glance around to see whose it was, and what they’re doing about it, because the reaction to what the phone is doing is almost always priceless. There are generally four different types of reac- tions, from decent to horrific. They are as follows: 1. The Panic — the owner of the phone glances all around him/her to see if anyone noticed - which we all did. Then they scramble for the phone and turn it off, beet red in the face, slightly sweating, and again glancing around to see if anyone cares. 2. The Cool — the owner of this cell phone does nothing at the time of the vibration and pretends it’s not them. Once the dan- ger of being singled out has passed, they slide the phone out and into their hands, and see who called or txt the person back. 3; The Asshole — this douche picks up the vibrating phone and starts gabbing away on it as if the whole class,. including the prof, wasn’t staring open-mouthed at them in sheer disbelief that someone could be so asinine. Anoprew Soxris CONTRIBUTOR IRE PE aL i NERS ETE AI RN a TE TORE ITE Cell Phones in Classrooms 5 RRR TIE A RE RIE: hg, PR EEY % = SRE Shee 4, The Sleeper or the Ignorer — the phone goes off and the owner is either asleep, or actually interested in the class and not what their friends are doing. Either way this one prolongs the vibrating because of the simple dismissal and not taking notice of the cell phone. Now, you could be any one of these or none if you don’t have a phone, but I’m sure the next time you’re in class and someone’s phone goes off, you can probably lump them in one of these cat- egories. Some will fall between and be either a cool person or a panicker. Or they’re a sleeper and an asshole, waking up at the last moment to start yapping to whomever. If it’s an emergency then it’s allowed, because if their kid is sad or sick or something, they have a right to know. But if they’re just talking about who got with whom, or how they did on their last test, then you have the right to cut this article out and tape it to their foreheads, with the Asshole part highlighted. Please remember that you’re in class and you’re here to learn. You don’t pay for a class and then just show up to be bored out of your head. You should be here because you want to learn! I mean, sure we’re all easily distracted and some of us are begging for some sort of diversion from the monotony of being in a lecture about Management Information Systems last semester. But remember, please, that a vibrating phone is just as intrusive as a ringtone, so either turn it off or get out. Thank you. Accelerate your future with the Diploma in Accounting Program (DAP) at the University of British Columbia. DAP prepares university graduates with limited or no training in accounting for entry into a professional accounting designation (CA, CGA, CMA or CPA in the US). APPLICATION DEADLINES When I asked Loralyn Murdoch prior to Saturday’s game how she thought her Girls would fair against the Okanagan Lakers, currently ranked 3rd and ahead of UNBC in the BCAA standing, she responded “The girls are going to compete hard and do their best to represent UNBC. I predict a close fast aggressive game and in the end I am hopeful that the home court advantage will help us.” Well, the Home court advantage must have helped because the UNBC Women’s team represented their school wonderfully and won the game 79 to 73. This bettered their record to 5 and 3 which places 4th in the BCAA out of 9 teams. When Loralyn was asked about what her team would have to do to keep up their positive momentum this season she stated: “This team is going to have to play tough at home in order to keep the momentum. We played very well at home in the first semester, and now we have the tough teams here this semester. The feeling of playing in a ‘home’ is very important and hopefully the fan support will help us keep up our intensity. At home the Ladies are 4 and 0 which says a lot about how much of a positive effect the home court at the Sports Centre and the UNBC fans have had on their psyches. Kady Dandeneau is a first year forward on the Timberwolves and is second in the BCAA in regards to points per game. She is averaging 16.57 in that category. When asked about Kady’s outstanding perform- ance Loralyn stated “Kady is a work horse. I definitely had high expectations of her coming in, she is strong, athletic and talented. What she brings to this team in her strength and competitiveness cannot be taught.” The Ladies Timberwolves also show great strength at the point with veteran Jaclyn Nazearno who is first in the BCAA with assists. When asked about Jaclyn, Loralyn said “ Jaclyn is a great player and is forced to play out of position this year. She is a natural shooter, and due to an injury to Jessica Wallace, Jac is now our point guard. She is handling the role very well and is doing her best to distribute the ball to her teammates.” The Ladies Timberwolves next game is at Kwantlen College on January the 18th. Their next home game, which I urge all UNBC students to go show their support at, is on February 1st against Douglas College.
