Page 10 -- Over The Edge -- April 1, 1997 BOARD OF DIRECTORS/SENATE ELECTION With the elections approaching quickly for UNBC students, we here at Over The Edge decided to run the positions of each candidate for the Board of Governors and Senate. We asked the candidates three questions apiece (three for BOG and three for the Senate) and here are the responses! The three questions we gave to the Board of Governors: 1) How can the Board of Governors position help the average student? 2) What issues will YOU bring to the Board? 3) What qualifies you for this position? The three questions we gave to the Senate: 1) How can the Senate help students? 2) What ideas or new focuses will you bring to Senate? 3) What qualifies you for this position? The following list did not contribute to our survey: Board of Governors: Toni Fletcher Senate: ~ Amy Dash Katherine Duncan Bruce Edson Darren Hynes Jackie Wojtula Thank you. . offices Arron Oberman_- Board of Governors 1) The board of govenors is a body in which financial decisions are made. Choices on fund ‘allocation for hiring new profs, building facilities, improving current library inventories and the building of services for students, like a student union building, are all matter of concern to both students and the Board of Governors. | have three key issues | feel are paramount in regards to UNBC student life. Le wines creation=otta “Job Finder” office here at UNBC. Our grads need to know that when they finish their degrees that there will be a job waiting for them when they get out. Did you know that the effectiveness of the <> office at UBC is so high that 90% or more of all grads that leave the Commerce Deptartment have a job waiting for them!?! These are the kind of numbers I'm looking for and demanding for the grads of UNBC 2) Higher allocation of funds for the Co-op and Student Services. Every student here pays fees and those fees should go _ to improving student life here at UNBC. | feel that security in knowing that ‘you'll be a valuable asset to the private sector will greatly improve the students sense of well being at UNBC. The co- op and student services departments help students prepare for the rest of their life after university and | feel it is imperative to support those offices. In doing so we are:securing the future for our students and to me that is what the Board of Governors is here to do. 3) Security has been wrongly falling under the ax over the past few years and WA TES intolerable! I'm not sure that most students are awoare but the campus is down to only three security guards and one of those is confined to the security office at all times. Most of you have noticed and brought o my attention that some of your favorite Commissionaires are missing. I’m sorry to say that most of them won't be coming back under the current budget and this is something that must be changed. Two roaming gaurds on campus is unacceptable! We were barely getting on with 3 guards walking around campus and to have a cut-back means putting the well being of our student body at risk. The need to protect the students at UNBC is of great importance and a top priority for the Board of Governors to reconsider and ammend. Before coming to UNBC | spent a total of 5 years in Cele) tie eS treat haiew management for two multi-million dollar corporations. One of which was in_ the computer manufacturing sector and the other hospitality and tourism. The need for expert managerial skills on my part could effect the bottom line and was a matter of losing a millions of dollars or not. I’ve always challenged my people to find new and more productive ways to achieve the company’s goals, which, at the heart of the matter, was really each employee’s own goal. | will expect nothing less and actually, even a bit more from the university staff and students. | am only one person but with the voices and ideas of the student body behind me ! can wield the force to make the changes that are necessary here at UNBC. Without the students UNBC is just an empty building and the positions available on the BOG are just useless titles. The students within our community are the very life blood here at UNCB and itis to them thatlam accountable. Therefore it is my goal to make every student concern the major topics of our Board of Governors meetings. To summerize, it is the -Student that puts me in office and it is to the student body that am | solely responsible. Jeremy Pillion - Board of Governors The board of governors position wil help the average student by allowing students to have a voice in key policy desicisions that effect them. | will bring two issues to the board.: One- Students don’t know what is going on in the board of governors untill after the fact. Students need to know what is going on before it happens so that their concerns can be taken into effect. Two- | feel that the general public and the business community should know what is going on at the university. We do not have a consistant policy for deceminating information to this goup . nor do we have a policy for dealing with these groups. What qualifies you for this position? I’m not sure. | think the fact that | genuinely wish to make Liz HUughes.- Board of Governors My name is Elizabeth Hughes, and |! am a first year graduate student in the Department of Psychology. My field of interest is the study of pain and pain management. Thankfully, my area of study is completely unrelated to my desire to run for the Board of Governors. Currently, | am the Vice President of the Northern British Columbia Graduate Students’ Society. As such, | am acutely aware of the need for student input into the administration of the university. If | am elected, | know that! can provide an effective voiceon the Board of Governors, representing not only the concerns of graduate students, but those of the entire student body. Thank you. Sean P Nardi - Senate | have spoken to several people, including some in administrative positions, and no one is able to give me a straight answer as to what exactly the Senate does. As well, the port of thie school constitution outlining the powers of the Senate is so wordy that it makes the Fraser river look clear. Regardless, as a Senator, these are the issues | would like to see brought to the forefront. | thought that the recent career fair that we had was nothing short of pathetic. Over the Spring break |. was at UBC and found a brochure from their career fair. There must have been a hundred, major companies at the fair. As well, the fair was held in the fall. The person running our career fair
