Looking at the alternatives to deal with wastes produced by their university, it was decided that a small-scale composting program could be easily implemented, and would provide a valuable lesson for students to learn - to take responsibility for our environment. In cooperation with REAPS, a formal proposal was submitted and approved by the President’s Council at UNBC, and two Environmental Youth Team grants, numerous donations, If you’re 12 to 25 | Cypress Airlines will fly you at a special one-way stand-by fare of ... and many volunteer hours built the now functioning composting site beside the university residences. Presently, one staff member and a myriad of volunteers daily collect organic wastes from the cafeteria kitchen and maintain the site; grounds maintenance workers collect and deliver piles of leaves and grass clippings to the site. Beginning the week of November 25th, students in the Residences will begin contributing their compostables. As in most programs which ask people to take time to contribute to the solutions, it has taken alot of time, patience by Stephanie Capyk and openness to learn from the setbacks. Today, with most of the logistics of getting the wastes to the site to rot in peace n place, the Composting Group has turned its focus towards education and plans for the future. After the holiday break, workshops for students on composting will be offered, a website on the project will be set up, an informational kit for groups who are interested in initiating composting in smaller institutions (colleges, day care centres, community centres....) is being compiled, and dreams of a beautiful, organic garden at the site are carrying us through the winter! Tiny sinew-like cats roam the area abandoned by their families, desperate for nourishment and shelter, those with conscience on this campus feel their pain but are reluctant to aid the poor and unfortunate creatures. Like the decrepit trees under a thickening blanket of snow in this frigid climate the tiny cats are left to their fate. Food for a fox? Or even an easy mark for a hungry radial tire barreling down the road on the way back from the bar. Like the abandoned cats, there are those who wander the hallways around the school in a world equally as frigid and hostile as the climate on the other side of the windows. To these people, the sunshine that makes the outside climate bearable to the rest of us never breaks through the haze of Or $115 to Victoria And we're talking reclining seats and more leg room, all in our quiet Convair or CAMPUS stagnant depression that pelages every second of their existence. Once again those with concience watch as the lonely ones wander from class to class, with an expression of pity mixed with a slight sparkle of contempt. To aid these poor lost souls is to create a bond in which the giver of confort becomes the life source of the lonely one that they have taken pity upon. For to feed a hungry cat is to gain a constant companion that will follow on your heels from that moment onward. When next you encounter the abandoned creatures of the campus remember that even though you may not be the one with the energy and time to comfort those living under the decrepit trees and frigid climate, not all things should be left to fate, and not every being is beyond deliverance. 580 turbo-prop which seats 37 in space meant for 54.
