Phone FU 8090 Page Seventy-eight He was posted to Montreal on the preventive service squad; then the narcotics squad. Whilst there he was on special patrol in the Matapedia valley for a while, then on border pa- trol between Mansonville and Bed- ford. At the outbreak of war he was placed on security work, and later given charge of industrial security for Que- bec. Commissioned during this as- signment, he became one of four officers chosen to pioneer in the new personnel department. He had charge of personnel work in the three maritime divisions and Que- bec for several years. Then, after a course at Canadian police college, Regina, he was made assistant C.I.B. officer, Montreal. Subsequently he was given com- mand of the American border sub- division at Montreal. His 19 detach- ments patrolled 300 miles of land border in which the customs-covered highways were outnumbered 10 to 1] by other roads and lanes—all possible routes for smugglers and illegal im- migrants. Would-Be Smugglers In this post and his earlier border patrol assignment, he met a number of would-be smugglers. Some were crafty, using hidden compartments under the seats of their cars. Others were tough—like the bootleggers who crashed barriers and tried to outdist- ance pursuers. Yet others relied on bluff. One man was caught simply pulling a toboggan loaded with pen and pencil sets, which he planned to bring into Canada. His system was so bold and obvious that he didn’t think the police would trouble to check him. In the spring of 1952 “Pete” Borde- eau came to B.C.—a province he had visited on duty earlier — and took charge of the special branch. This hush-hush- arm of the Mounted is the one that checks suspected subversives. In June, 1953, he replaced Assistant Commissioner C. W. Harvison as chief of the C.I.B. for British Columbia—a post he continues to hold. He is aide de camp to His Honor the Lieutenant-Governor and presi- dent of the R.C.M.P. officers’ mess here. He is an ardent fisherman and golfer (11 handicap) and also a “base- ment squirrel,” as he describes himself a home workshop man.
