It was the Serbian Secret Society
“Union of Death.” That was founded
at the turn of the century by Col.
Dragutin Dimitrievic, soldier and
conspirator.

It was generally known as the Black
Hand and was composed mainly of
officers who conflicted with the
civilian administration.

Dimitrievic had a reputation of
great courage, intelligence, patriotism
and energy but was ruthless and
utterly unscrupulous. He was sen-
tenced to death for inciting to mutiny
and conspiring to assassinate the
Crown Prince (later King, Alexander
of Serbia). The Black Hand tied with
the colonel.

Black Hand Terrorized B.C.

From 1907 to 1910 British Columbia
was terrorized by the Black Hand,
especially in the Revelstoke district.

Believed the work of the Black
Hand was the brutal murder of Frank
Julian, an oldtime resident of Revel-
stoke, in September, 1910.

That it was the work of the Black
Hand was believed certain at that
time.

The face of the victim had been
marked by his murderers before
death. On the face from the top of
the forehead to the chin, covering
both eyes, nose and mouth, was a jet
black circle like a black bullseye.

This was caused by application of
vitroil liquid applied before death.

The liquid had burned the eyes and
had parched the skin of the face and
nothing could remove the marks.

Citizens of Revelstoke called upon
the attorney-general’s department to
act quickly to apprehend the criminals
responsible. They said it was felt no

the town had received letters signed
by the Black Hand in which assort-
ment of demands were made.

Camorra Gangs
The Camorra was a secret or quasi-
secret society of considerable dimen-
sions which flourished in South Italy
from 1820 to 1911. It is now extinct.

It originated in Neapolitan prisons
filled with victims of Burbon rule and
oppression, its first purpose being the
protection of prisoners.

Ten years after—in 1830—it was
carried into the cities by prisoners
who had served their terms.

The members worked the streets in
gangs.

Mewed Like Cats

They had special methods of com-
municating with one another. They
mewed like cats at the approach of a
patrol and crowed like cocks when a
likely victim approached. A long sigh
gave warning that the latter was not
alone; a sneeze meant he was not
worth powder and shot.

The society rapidly expanded its
power and its operations included
smuggling and blackmailing of all
kinds in addition to ordinary road
robberies. Its influence grew to be
considerable.
