“That's a good story,’ observed the
Captain bluntly “only we happen to know
it was one of Ollie Cheesecake’s toughs,
Jimmy Lippy, who drove the trailing
coupe and Marino was in the Pontiac.
His fingerprints were on the steering
wheel. lf you saw what happened you
did so from inside the trolley car with
a rod in your hand. Now—where’s
Cheesecake ?”

“Dunno!”

“And Lippy ?”

“T dunno. Sure I dunno.”

“Well, there’s one thing you do know.
Who’s this jane that Daley’s giving the
run-around? The one you were seen with
last week. I mean the smart redhead.”

“Oh!” Dave Maio gave the officer a
startled glance. “You mean Babe Al-
bright.”

Carey nodded and jotted down the
girl’s address. Speeding to the spot, Carey
and Donahue pulled up before an apart-
ment block on 66th Street, made their
way upstairs and knocked. Immediately
the door was opened by a statuesque and
pretty redhead in flaming scarlet. Her
large, long-lashed eyes studied the officers
questioningly. “I think,” her look sud-
denly hardened, “you've come to the
wrong place.”

“You're Babe Albright, aren’t you?”
Carey shouldered into the room despite
the girl’s deepening frown.

“That’s me, but I don’t see that that
gives you guys any right to butt in here.
What's this—a stick-up?”

“We're from headquarters,” rasped
Carey. “All we want to know is the
address of your boy friend, Frank Daley.”’

“How in hell,” the girl’s tenseness
melted, “should I know? I don’t keep
tabs on him. I haven't heard from him
for over a week.”

Donahue. “You know Frank’s mixed
up in this Mount Vernon trolley murder.
And we know Frank’s been in touch

Though white-faced and scared, the
redhead stayed with her guns and the
officers retired defeated. “I’m going to
have that scarlet siren tailed if it takes
six months,” Carey swore angrily, “and
well check up on her phone calls, too.
Sooner or later she'll lead us right to
Daley.”

But days turned to weeks without the
slightest lead. Either the girl and Daley
were particularly cagey or Babe had
spoken the truth when she said they were
out of touch with each other. The tapped
telephone gave no clue.
