NUGSS Turns Super Sweet Sixteen

See how your student union has grown over the years

This year marks a momentous occasion. Your Northern Undergraduate Student
Society (NUGSS) is turning sixteen. To celebrate this milestone birthday the Board
of Directors are throwing a party and inviting the whole school. While it is still
unconfirmed as to whether or not they will get that BMW they have had their eye on,
or if there will be an opening dance routine performed by NUGSS President Kaleigh
Milinazzo, the theme of the night is Totally 80s.

Created in 1994, the Northern Undergraduate Student Society grew and advanced
just as the population of the university began to expand. The purpose of NUGSS
is to provide the students of UNBC with network of people who can help students
better their education and time at UNBC. Every undergraduate student who is
enrolled at UNBC is automatically a member of NUGSS and has access to a myriad
of programs and services provided by the Society.

While it took several years for NUGSS to grow into the high functioning organization
that it is today, in recent years NUGSS has provided UNBC students with many
unique services. Most notably, NUGSS has been able to provide students with a
health and dental plan as well as passed two referendums which have provided
UNBC students with a U-Pass all year round.

One of their biggest achievements however, happened in 2008 with the opening of
the Northern University Student Centre (NUSC) which not only houses CFUR, Over
the Edge, NUGSS, and the Pride Centre, but also provides students with coffee
(Degrees Coffee Co.), food (Grab and Go), and a pub (Thirsty Moose Pub). All
things considered, that is a pretty hefty accomplishment for a 10 year old!

NUGSS also has an ombudsperson on staff to help all UNBC students resolve any
issues or conflicts they may have. NUGSS also provides emergency food aid and
student loans for any students who may be in need. In addition, there are 11 Board
of Directors who each specialize in a different area and can help students with
anything from Clubs problems to women’s issues.

While UNBC and its many facets may be relatively young in comparison to Canada’s
other great universities, it is quite clear through NUGSS and other organizations on
campus, like the Women’s Centre and CFUR, that UNBC is much wiser than its
mere sixteen years may suggest.

NUGSS will be holding its Annual General Meeting on Monday November 22 at 12
noon. All students are encouraged to come out to hear what the Board of Directors
have been up to this year, vote on proposed by-laws and listen to the annual audit
report. Students may also propose their own changes to the NUGSS by-laws, but
all submissions must be in by November 18 by 4pm.

The “Green University Centre” Under Rennovation

By January 2011 the campus will have its own centre for sustainability

The renovations have now begun on UNBC’s Green
University Centre, which will be located in the Winter
Garden across from Tim Horton’s. The Green
University Centre will serve as a resource for UNBC
students, staff and faculty to access information
on sustainable activities on campus and beyond.
The Centre will provide information about issues
such as renewable energy (e.g. bioenergy), energy
conservation, climate change, waste reduction, local
food, alternative transportation and recycling.

Danielle Smyth, the Green University Project Manager,
will be accompanied by two other positions in the new
location, including David Claus, Energy Manager
and Kyle Aben, Pacific Institute for Climate Solutions
Coordinator. “The Green Centre will be a hub for
sustainability on campus,” said Smyth. “Students can
look forward to volunteer opportunities with the Centre
and the potential for future student internships.”

The centre will feature an open concept office design.
The design will allow for students to have a place to visit
and learn about environmental sustainability. Smyth
commented, “The centre will feature display screens,
a main campus recycling depot and, we hope to havea
resource centre library with literature on sustainability.”
The centre will be a welcoming atmosphere for people

our university.

to drop by and ask questions. Its central location in
the Winter Garden will ensure that the Green Centre
becomes a regular part of campus life.

The Green University Centre is also being renovated

with a sustainable focus. Most of the materials being
used in the renovations are from re-used or recycled
sources. The flooring in the centre is all recycled
; tile carpeting and the area will also feature the most
> energy efficient LED lighting. The amount of materials
needed for the project has also been cut down by the
open concept design. The renovations for the centre
are expected to be completed in January.

The Green University Centre will also be the location
for future Green related events. People from around
the community will be welcome to check the Centre
out, however most of the events will be located and
focused within the University. “We have intentionally
made the Green University Centre a focal point of
the campus,” said Smyth. “The centre is an important
step in fostering a culture of sustainability at UNBC.
