sion Hospital at Aklavik. Twenty
hours later he delivered King to the
care of Dr. Urquhart. Running be-
hind the sled, he had made the 80-

mile journey without a single stop and
with a team of dogs exhausted at the
outset!

Trappers Join Police Hunt

Inspector Eames was first stunned
by the cowardly attack upon King,
then blazing mad. At last Johnson
had committed a serious crime, a
crime that was a challenge to the
authority of the entire Mounted
Police Force. Through the frigid
ether crackled a call from Station
UZK, “Voice of the Northern
Lights,” calling all trappers in the
Delta to join the police in hunting
down Johnson, and ordering the
Mounted Police at Arctic Red River
to come to Aklavik immediately
for duty.

Soon Eames was the centre of a de-
termined, granite-faced posse com-
prised of Constables Millen and Mc-
Dowell, a couple of dark-visaged
Louchoux guides, and trappers Noel
Verville, and Knud Lang, Karl Gar-
lund and Ernest. Sutherland. Their
ahtegis and snowshirts belted about
their waists, and wolverine-trimmed
hoods pulled down over their heads,
they whipped up their huskies and
headed for the Rat, carrying dyna-
mite with which to blast their way
into the fortified cabin. One thing

Urquhart’s report that, thanks to
Constable McDowell’s arduous trek,
King would recover. The bullet had
just missed his heart by a_hair’s
breadth.

At last they reached the sinister
loop-holed cabin. Posting his men at
strategic points, Eames called to John-
son to surrender. The reply was
prompt and uncompromising. From
within came the whip-like crack of a
rifle. A bullet whined above the in-
spector’s head. “Come on,” he shouted,
“we'll rush him and smash the door
in!”
