T THE SOUTHERN END of
the Cariboo, lying along the
Fraser River, is a stretch of
country that, as far as physical fea-
tures go, could be a portion of Ari-
zona’s famed painted Desert. In the
summer months, the temperature is
frequently over 100° in the shade,
with not a trace of moisture in the
super-heated air. The scenery could
be used without a change for any of
the Hopalong Cassidy films, and a
“desert rat prospector,” complete with
burrow, would fit his surroundings
perfectly.
Tourists Never See It
Tourists don’t ever see it, although
the dude ranch country of the south-
ern Cariboo is only a score of miles
to the east. No highways run across
it; in fact, even with a jeep you can
only reach the fringes of it. Parts of
it couldn’t be traversed even with a
saddlehorse. Other portions are used
as winter range by several of the big
cattle ranches. Most of the part that

Supports a sparse growth of bunch
grass, with occasional clumps of sage-
brush and a lot of dwarf cactus. The
spines of this last item, however, are
anything but dwarfed! They also have
points as sharp and piercing as porcu-
pine quills.

Two very remarkable formations,
probably both caused by erosion, are
found, one at each end of this little
Arizona. They resemble each other
only very slightly, even if they are the
result of similar actions. In addition

to these main scenic marvels, there
are many other weird formations.
Some scenes found there might come
from a landscape on the moon, so
rough and desolate they are.

At the southern end of this area,
overlooking the old Grinder Ranch,
is a twisted maze of tortuous little
canyons and sharp pointed peaks,
which is known to the local people as
the Hole. Absolutely impassable, it is
colorful with streaks of varigated
earth and exposed veins of different
