ETE ie Be ow 55 Snowmobiles: It is that time of year again and we are all anxiously awaiting getting out on the snow- mobile. Every year people are unsure of what the rules and regulations are regarding snowmobiles in town. If you follow the Motor hicle Act, at no time is a _ snow- mobile permitted to be on a _ pub- lic highway with or without a licence plate, as it is not de- Signed or equipped to be used on public roads. f In Cassiar, it sometimes be- comes necessary to drive down the side of or across the roadway to gain access to the back trails. If common sense and good judge- ment is utilized, one should not Ves ITSTIME JOE Took J Ss NY A XE oo \ 4 GREETINGS {ND ee BEST WISHES USWA Bes L 6536. ail CASSIAR R.C.M.P. - Submitted.by Jenafor DE 2 encounter any trouble from the RCMP. It is suggested that snow- mobile drivers purchase liability insurance for their snowmobiles from the Government Agent. If you. are involved in an accident you would be covered for damages to the other person. This would not require you to obtain a. licence plate or pay provincial sales tax on the snow- mobile. The average cost would be approximately $60.00 for six months. We are however, encouraging that you do register your machine as it wold be a record of owner- ship in the event that it got stolen. It's time to shift. into winter driving habits now, and to think ahead to how you'd handle bad road conditions before you find yourself in the middle of them. Here are a few tips to make your driving easier this winter. 1. When you're starting Run the heater and defroster to clear and prevent fogging of the windshield. Clear sonw from all the windows and lights. If necessary, clear a path for. the wheels. Then put your front wheels as straight as _ possible and ease out without spinning. If wheels do begin to spin, let up on the accelerator until trac- tion returns. 2. Following Another vehicle on a_ winter road is no time for intimacy. Increase your usual following distance by six times on icy sur- faces. And slow down. Really slow down. - 3. Steering On snow or ice calis’ for smooth, careful movements. Tits. you do start to _ skid, don't panic. Take your foot off the accelerator, and force yourself (it isn't easy) to steer calmly in the direction of the skid (against the direction if you have front wheel drive) until you're in control again. 4. Braking slippery Pump down Takes longer on surfaces than on dry. brake wheels and quickly but gently on the pedal until you feel the are about to lock, release, pump again. 5. Rain Brings a special challenge: hydroplaning. In hydroplaning, your vehicle's tires rise off the surface of the road/’and your're literally riding on water....out of control. I£ your vehicle hy- droplanes, ease up on the accel- erator and slow down without braking or turning suddenly. Then get your tires checked: bald tires are especially hazar- dous in the rain. And just a few last-minute reminders: Check the weather forecast and road conditions be- fore you leave. Take clothes for the weather, not the in-car temp- erature. Tell people at both ends of your route when you're leaving and when you plan to ar- .xive. Always set off with a full tank of gas. If you do get stuck, you can still run your car for heat - with a window open a bit. Remember, keep the air fresh. sos SSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSsssssssssssssssssssss SSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssessssssssssssssssosesoesococasossooacosoossososcs ry Merry HO!
