. October 30, 1996 Over The Edge 5 Editorial Well, it’s time that this particular column got a little sarcastic. The speeches by the Northern Undergraduate Student Society (NUGSS), held on Monday the 28th were a marginally organized success. . It brought tears to my eyes as I listened to the pathetically inadequate sound system attempt to amplify the various candidates. The only speakers who did not use the microphone were Brian Cole and Paul Gruner and, to their credit, they were relatively audible. The turnout was mediocre, to say the least. Some students I talked to afterwards still did not know what the student society did for them, let alone why they should vote. After listening to the speeches, I might credit that fact to the amount of information given out by each candidate. Some people didn’t even introduce themselves, their major or their focus for their campaign. Ultimately, some candidates didn’t even know that they had to give the speech that day and hadn’t prepared a speech! The open question period was conducted somewhat more coherently, but I found myself hearing the same points made by all of the candidates. Very few showed the initiative to make their presentation more interesting and some of the candidates seemed very ‘depressed’ about their job. The crowd that had assembled heard that the current NUGSS staff was not impressed with the number of new people running for There’s nothing more frustrating than missing out on a course you need because it’s full. It can throw your whole academic schedule off. So why wait until next term to pick up that course you need now? And with:our on-line computer conferencing, positions. To the crowd’s credit they didn’t leave when the accusations were made by various members of the board. Unfortunately, the argument quickly became monotonous and I spoke with several people afterwards who found the accusations either insulting or annoying. After all, if the student society is such a good place to be, (as NUGSS would like us to think), why are the people complaining that there is no competition? Brenda Haggerty, the current Director of Social and Promotions was the only person who abstained from expressing this particular view. _ If this is the best that UNBC can sport for such future events, well, I can foresee a long, slow process to UNBC ever becoming a school where people can be proud to attend. . | | Books on Fourth == Phone 563-6637 Fax 563-6610 Toll Free 1-800-303-2950 1229 4th Avenue Prince George, B.C.
