Born in Ontario, Judy graduated from Cornwall General Hospital in 1966. She served as a Public Health Nurse at Fort MacMurray, Alberta prior to - coming to Cassiar. _ Judy and her husband Eric have two children. Paul is three years old and Katrina is six years old. Eric operates Heavy Equipment at the mine. They arrived here in Cassiar on October 21, 1977 and are now living on MacDame. Judy has some definite ideas on the role of the Public Health nurse. She feels she could best serve the com- munity through assisting our doctors ~ and accepting personal and school referrals, She feels she should be _ready to assist on a social as well as a medical level. Baby Immunization Clinics are . already being scheduled and instruc- tion and information regarding immu- nization is offered at these clinics. Judy is also planning to schedule Pre-Natal classes. The office hours of the Public Health Unit are between 9 am and 5 pm. _ Mondays - Judy is in office Tuesdays - at Good Hope Lake Wednesdays - at School ~ Thursdays - New Baby Clinic - Immunization Fridays - House Calls RAYBESTOS—MANHATTAN COMMUNITY AWARD EVE THIRWELL For continued and untiring activity for the betterment and advancement of community . life in Cassiar. 1. Leader in organizing and participating in the Cassiar Handicraft Scciety. 2. Organizes many fund raising projects for the Community including the Canadian Institute for the Blind fund raising. 3. Gives of her time to the making and dona- ting of gifts for the Cassiar Arena fund. 4. Nominated as Cassiar’s Representative to the Canadian Institute of Mining and Meta- Ilurgy Woman of the Year Award. 5. Acts as an auxillary Fireperson by maintain- ing surveillance on the Fire Hall for the Cassiar Volunteer Fire Brigade. - 6. Gives of her time to organize Social Events for the Lions’s Club, Curling Club and Community Club. 7. She is active in Community activities and_ extremely generous with her time and effort in support of anything to which she lends a hand. Many people have been curious as to the reason for the crew of photographers and sound people _in Cassiar from January 13th to 19th. This crew was engaged in the making of an audio-visual presentation for Cassiar Asbes— ~ tos to show at the Annual Gener-— al Meeting of the Canadian Insti- tute of Mining and Metallurgy. This meeting will be held April 23rd to 27th, 1978 in Vancouver and will bring together mining people from all over Canada -and around the world. Cassiar Asbestos has been given the feature role at the C.I.M.M. Meeting and is attempt- ‘ing to give an accurate assess-— -tuent of the Cassiar Mine by show- ing technical data (Mining, Geo- logy, Planning, Maintenance, Tramline, Environmental and Mill- ing) as well as a general presen- tation showing our town and surrounding area. The general presentation will show local scenes and interviews, with a cross-section of Cassiar life, Hopefully, both its good and not-so-good sides. It is anticipated that a dress rehearsal of the "Cassiar Mine Story" will be shown to the residents of Cassiar early in April. Raybestos — Manhattan Inc. is pleased to present her with this award in recognition of Services rendered to Cassiar, B. C. This ~ward was presented to Eve Thirwell on December 10, 1977 by Brian Pewsy, Mine Manager, Cassiar Asbestos Corp. of Cassiar. CASSTAR THEATRE Rumor has it that the date of the opening of the new 300-seat Cassiar Theatre is MARCH 18, 1978. Rumor also has it that the first movie being shown will be "STAR WARS". In order for our new Public Health Unit to work to maximum efficiency, Judy requires some volunteer help in the office. She would like to have someone take phone messages and make appointments two mornings a week, In addition, she would like to have someone assist her in administer- ing eye and ear tests at the school. No experience is necessary .....Judy will show you the ropes. Watch for a regular Public Health column which will TISCUSS current issues in Public Health, And Still They Come SCLOOL LNROLLMENT UP OVER 300 Cassiar School's enrollment has passed the 300 mark for the first time in it's his- tory. [Enrollment as of Jan- uary 1978 was 304 students in Kindergarten to Grade 12 with heavy renrollments in Kindergarten, Grades 3, 4, 8 and 9, This comes close © to the predicted enrollment of 316 or the 1977-78 school year which was set in the spring of 1977.
