As such, it is our mandate to report on issues of interest to students in the North- ern Region. We encourage all students, both on the main and regional campuses to submit to Over the Edge. Over the Edge is part of the Canadian Uni- versity Press network of papers, otherwise known as CUP. CUP is an organization that is entirely owned by member papers, and provides such services as a news wire and advertis- ing to Over the Edge. Over the Edge is published every second week during the fall and winter semesters. SHELBY PETERSEN EDITOR IN CHIEF There is Hope Schizophrenia and how you can help ALDEN CHOW CONTRIBUTOR ONLINE SOURCE Schizophrenia is a treatable mental illness that affects a person’s ability to differentiate between what is real and what is not. Symptoms include withdrawal from society, delusions, and hallucinations. The disorder usually develops among young people 15-25 years old. At first, schizophrenia had a devastating impact on my family. My brother and mother had schizophrenia during my childhood. There was yelling, sadness, and violence. As a result, my sister and | were placed into foster care for a year and a half and my brother was put into a group home. My mother was also hospitalized. My family started to heal when my mother and brother began taking medications to treat schizophrenia. Today, we are still a family. The British Columbia Schizophrenia Society (BCSS) is a non-profit organization that helps people living with schizophrenia and other serious mental illnesses along with their families and friends. | decided to help others by volunteering as a BCSS Partnership Program family member public speaker to share my experiences of coping and living with family members with schizophrenia. | would like to reduce the stigma that is associated with schizophrenia. The BCSS Partnership Presentations include a family member and a consumer sharing their stories of how mental illness has impacted their lives and a mental health professional discussing mental illness. If you know of any professors at UNBC or the College of New Caledonia who may be interested in hosting a presentation for their students, please e-mail me: chowa@unbc.ca Well, only one more issue of Over the Edge is left until we break for the holidays! This semester has flown by so quickly | can hardly believe it is December! All | can say is that | hope the exam period goes by as quickly as the semester did! We here at Over the Edge are super excited for the Winter Semester # to begin! As some of you may know, Over the Edge is a member of the Canadian University Press (CUP). CUP is a national non-profit cooperative organization owned and operated by more than 80 newspapers (including OTE). CUP is the oldest news service in the world and North America’s only student press cooperative! Every year CUP hosts a national conference for all of the member papers to attend. In January, the 73rd National Conference (NASH) will be held in Montreal. Over the Edge is so excited because we are sending four members east to attend! This is the most delegates that OTE has ever sent! This conference is so important to us because UNBC doesn't have a journalism program. The weeklong conference in Montreal will allow us to attend several classes on how to be better journalists including topics 1 on interview skills, production, and ethics! This means that we will be able to make Over the Edge even better once we get back! | You might be wondering how we plan on paying for all this? Well, like most other student organizations paying for trips is always an issue. So, the OTE team has been furiously fundraising in an attempt to scrape up | enough money! We have already had some pretty generous donations ~ to which we are eternally grateful! On November 24, we even had a bake sale which was pretty successful. We also plan on hosting some pretty fun events when the new semester starts, so leave you schedules open!
