SAFETY NOTES

Hagards that are removed cause no
injuries.

Some are difficult to remove. One
that is easy to remove is that of an

eye injury. This type of hazard exposure

requires early and drastic improvement
for the injury source always causes a
serious risk of permanent disability.

Our own records bear this statement
out and here, in brief, are the facts.

Total injuries by accident January
lL, 1959 sie October 31 3 1963 = 891.

Total eye ‘njuries for this period
bail 115.

Normally over 300 injuries occur

| before one produces servere harm. Yet

of the number of eye injuries (115)

(a) Two caused permanent injury.
(>) Four, no less, were compensable
that is, they caused over 3

days lost time,

I am sure that no one wants blind-
ness with its inevitable blight.

Yet this risk is deliberately gam-
bled with where we neglect to use eye
protection where a greater than normal
eye hazard exists.

Why take blind chances with dis-

| astrous odds?

Many holidayers who have visited
Las Vegas figure odds quite closely.

Yet, I repeat we often take real
stupid odds at work.

Perhaps we do this because eye
protection here is made too easily avail~
able and its use not sufficiently visited
On.

Many other concerns have been faced
with this problem and found the only
effective answer to be a program of
mandatory eye protection * which is at

| least 90% effective.

This may be the anser here for cer
certainly managment insists that eye
injuries be eliminated insofar as is
possible.

Think this over carefully.
