The Future of Fine Arts at UNBC ANDREW KURJATA NEWS EDITOR The recent protocol agreement with Emily Carr is a big step forward for Fine Arts at UNBC, but those cam- paigning for more artistic expression in the North are hardly resting on their laurels. According to VP Academic & Provost Howard Brunt the deal allows a “toe hold” for fine arts, and UNBC “can build it over time.’ Already, staff, faculty, and community members are looking ahead to what UNBC can do next. It is hoped that the current program plans will be built with a strong First Nations and Aboriginal arts program. It is expected that since there is not much in the way of these sort of stud- ies offered in Canada, it would be a“big national, and potentially international, draw.’ There has also been communi- cation with local arts groups about — getting the arts community of Prince George and surrounding area involved with the program.“ The North has such a vibrant culture and artistic expression of all sorts,’ says Brunt. There are already talks of bringing some Emily Carr faculty members to UNEC for special summer programs in studio arts. There are also tenta- tive discussions underway with Grand Prairie Regional College (GPRC) of inking a similar agreement. A deal with GPRC would greatly expand the scope of UNBC's fine arts, as it is a respected institute for its music, visual, and per- forming arts programs, all areas which are much less developed at Emily Carr. Associate Professor and Chair of English Stan Beeler, who offers popular courses on film and television studies at UNBC, says that research is currently underway on the possibility of offering Media programs at UNBC, though it is “far too early to say anything about its final form.’ “We are, of course, quite interested in potential enrollment in anything we put together, so if students are interest- ed they can contact me at [stan@unbc. ca], in writing, or make an appointment to see me, said Beeler via e-mail. It is stressed that in all these areas, - talks are ‘very early in their develop- ment. However, if they are successful, UNBC will be expanding its fine arts offerings drastically over the next few years, Students who wish to support this process are encouraged to contact staff and faculty to express their inter- est in fine arts programs at UNBC. “A deal with GPRC would greatly ex- pand the scope of UNBC's fine arts, as it is a respected in- stitute for its music, visual, and perform- ing arts programs, all areas which are much less developed -at Emily Carr."
