Perhaps Loney’s cry reached Cullmer and
made him pause. Then the firemen dashed
up with their ladders and made for the third
story window. The sight of the coming
rescue gave Cullmer enough strength to hold
on until he saw a fireman take Mrs. Wheeler
from his relaxing clutch.

Mrs. Wheeler was taken down the ladder
and Cullmer climbed down after her. They
were treated by a doctor, but made their
escape as soon as they could without arous-
ing suspicion. Meanwhile the gang had
learned of their leader’s peril. Terry turned
savagely on Loney, who had run back with
the news of the rescue.

"Yes, and no thanks to you that they ain’t
burned to a crisp, you !” he cried.

crying that the fire had cut off their escape.

Then George Cullmer, bandaged, shaken
and chastened, made his appearance. Loney
prepared for an ordeal. But Cullmer actu
ally avoided looking at his gang.

“It’s all my fault, boys,” he said. “Loney
did just as he was told. But Aggie and I
started drinking. I suppose I must have been
feeling that nothing on earth could go wrong
with me. First thing I knew that fire walked
into our rooms without knocking. We would
have been roasted alive if we had tried the
stairs. Shows that nobody ought to be too
sure about his luck!”
