McKELVIE July, 1868, Was a Busy Monih for the Wild Horse Creek Detachment of the, British Columbia Police—and the Fourth and the Twelfth Caused All the Trouble! WILD HORSE CREEK, not far from the flourishing city of Cranbrook, is a peaceful spot today. It slumbers and dreams of the days of long ago, when it did not belie its name and when it was the chief adminis- trative centre for the whole of the Kootenays. A rip-roaring mining camp was Wild Horse in the “Sixties of the last century, with a tough population that settled arguments with revolvers and bowie knives. Wild Horse was a typical Western min- ing community of the period, built of boards and canvas, with saloons and gambling halls providing amusement and incidently fatten- ing on the miners’ gold. But Wild Horse was the parent of East Kootenay mining. From the colourful camp prospectors ventured forth to find the other placer workings of the district. But it was a noisy, hilarious place, largely populated by rough characters who crossed the border from Montana and Idaho. A large percentage of these adventurers were Irish, with little respect for British law or institutions. But they learned to fear if not respect both, for the government at New West- minster took prompt measures in 1865, when the news of discovery was made known, to take control. James Normansell, a former member of the Royal Engineers, a man of daring and resource, was sent in as Chief Constable and with him went Const. Carrington. But the man who won a large measure of respect, not only for himself, but also for the Crown that he represented, was Gold Commissioner Peter O'Reilly, better known today as “Judge” O'Reilly. It is related of him that when he first went to one interior camp when gold was found there, he mounted a stump and addressed the gun- toting miners who had come from the South. “T have only one thing to say to you,” he is reported to have told them. “If there is a shooting, there will be a hanging.” Tt was sufficient. But there was a shooting at Wild Horse— a wanton murder—and there was no hang- ing. It took place in 1868. It was on the Fourth of July, which was celebrated with vigour, enthusiasm and . noise. The miners— mostly from the United States—always made a great deal of such holidays in the republic as Washington’s birthday and Independence Day. And on the “Glorious Fourth,” in 1868, the day at Wild Horse was given over to sports of a kinds. CELEBRATION ENDS IN DISASTER Naturally, the saloons did a roaring tradi and especially one run by a man name Buckly. The barroom was crowded. Wir ' ners of bets on the races “set em up” tim and time again, and Buckly now and agai put up a round of his dynamic “red-eye to encourage the continuance of the orgy Const. Carrington did not like the loo of things. He knew the potency of th stuff that Buckly was serving. It wa “fightin” likker.” So Carrington kept a eye on the place, hoping for peace but pre paring for action. It was about eight o’clock when Bo Devlin, looking for a row, started troubl in the saloon. Carrington heard the noise of battle anc made a dash for the bar. As he enterec¢ River Barbecue I.
