i¢6 lifestyles November 16, 2011 - Over the Edge LET'S GET DRAMATIC The How To DEVON FLYNN CONTRIBUTOR as the teacher been giving you the evil eye for acting out in H:« again? Do the neighbour’s think you’re weird for talk- ing aloud in random accents? Are your roommates refusing to read over your creative writing piece? We can help! The UNBC Drama Club is a club that caters to all the students out there who find their wacky antics just aren’t reaching the suitable audi- ence. We love new members and are always looking for people to add to our troupe of actors and actresses. This is your chance to break into Broadway kid! I mean, everyone has to start somewhere! The Drama Club performs a variety of plays, from the comedic to the tragic. Just last year, we sold out two performances of a murder mystery wedding dinner theatre show! Whatever the show, we put it on with enthusiasm and energy. Now, we want you to join us in doing it again. If the thought of a long monologue or soliloquy scare you, that’s okay. We can always use technical help with behind-the-scene assist- ance: props, backdrops, costumes, or lights. These roles are just as important as acting, sometimes more. You may not like being in the spotlight, but someone has to shine that light somewhere, and it could be you! But if following queues and directions are not your thing, why not BE the boss? Despite what many timid newbies think, directing isn’t as hard as it seems. It’s exactly as it sounds actually — you read a script and direct actors and technicians as to how you interpret the play and think it should go down. “Move a little to the right!” “Speak louder!” “Queue the ninjas!” Maybe your play is not open to your epic ninjas vs. pirates battle royal scene. That’s okay, you can write one! The Drama Club loves English majors. We love their creativity and enthusiasm. Short stories, intriguing narratives, heck, if you got a prose of picturesque poems that can be acted out, we’ll take a crack at ‘em! If you are interested in seeing your literary piece come to life, let us know and we will bring it to the students of UNBC with dramatic flair! Too busy to commit to a full time play? No problem! This year, the club has opted a drop-in style of meeting. Students who are too busy to rehearse and memorize lines can join Drama Club members every Tuesday at 7pm in the Canfor Theatre to play theatre games and per- form improv. We understand that sometimes it’s hard to find the time to get involved in an awesome club, but we still love to provide students with the opportunity to shake off mid-term stress and have a laugh or two. So show up, even for a bit. While you’re at it, bring a friend, get hyped up with and have some fun. (Note — meeting times may change next semester). Has my little plug got you excited and ready to flex those writing/ directing/acting muscles? Then join our Facebook group or give us an email at unbcdrama@gmail.com We want to hear from you! If you aren’t as interested in being part of a play, then come out and support our club by attending our series of theatrical shorts! We have a variety of plays that touch on a medley of themes, from how to deal with the loss of a loved one to putting up with a loved one’s obsession with safety. We are confident you will be entertained by the intermis- sion! Admission is by donation. Hugs and well thoughts are nice, but they don’t pay the bills. Our performances dates are: November 25th and 26th @ 7pm in the Canfor Theatre. Be sure to bring a friend or two! GRADUATE SCHOOL OF -2PUBLIC.
