The police were called and things quietened down as the guests went home. Soon afterwards the sound of shooting was heard, and the voice of a woman screaming “Help! He’s dead!” or words to that effect. Around midnight a_ well-known London doctor was awakened by the ring of his telephone bell and a woman's hysterical voice crying, “Come at once. He’s shot! There’s been an accident.” Stephens Found Dead On his arrival at the Mews, he found the dead body of Stephens on the floor, with Mrs. Barney in a fit of violent hysterics. In spite of her frenzied protests, he called the police, but Elvira was, by this time, unable to give a coherent account of what had happened. How- ever she managed to tell her tale later. She said that she and the man had quarreled and he had threatened to leave her. She then told him she was going to shoot herself and he tried to take the gun away. During the close struggle it went off and the bullet killed him. To this story she stuck, even on the Witness stand. New Facts At the police station later on new facts were brought to light. A nearby tenant said that only one shot was fired, another said she had heard two. One woman swore that she heard Mrs. Barney say, “I'll shoot you.” Other tenants, living a little way off, testified in court that on a pre- vious occasion they had heard her shouting from an upstairs window: “Laugh, baby, laugh for the last time,” as she shot at Stephens (who- was leaving the apartment) and missed him. So Elvira Dolores Barney was formally charged with murder. Her defender was Sir Patrick Hastings, an eminent barrister, assisted by Walter Framton, his junior, who was briefed by her solicitor. Cordon of Police to Hold Crowd To say that the Central Criminal Court was crowded, is an under- statement. People stood outside all night, hoping to get a good seat. Even the lawyers themselves found it difficult to make their way in, and a cordon of police was needed to keep unauthorized thrill-seekers out.
