Back to the kitchen he interviewed Shiron and his friend, who gave the name,of James Potter. Yes, they had been in town the night before and walked home early. As the Sergeant questioned the two men, Const. Sweeney motioned him to step outside. “T saw that fellow Shiron the other night, Sergeant,” said the constable when they were out of earshot. “He was standing near Hood’s Drug Store. I thought he was drunk and moved him on.” The two police officers talked the situ ation over in undertones and, at length, they decided to arrest Shiron and hold him on a drunk charge. Checking the construction office records, they discovered that Potter had given his name as James Tindle. When they produced their National Registration certificates, Potters was in the name of James Tindle. It was decided to charge him with obstructing the police by giving a false name. The charges were flimsy, but the officers wanted t'me—time to clear up a lot of details. : The two men were locked up in cells at Prince George and, by next morning, were yelling for drugs. Their arms were covered with hypo scars—clear evidence of past degeneracy. A physician was called and when they saw the syringe being prepared they quivered and shook with anticipation. BotH MEN Dope FIENDS “JT guess you can do this better than I can,’ remarked the doctor, but, without answering, each whipped out a piece of filthy string, tying it tourniquet-fashion round the upper arm. Each injection was accompanied by an expression of pure satisfaction. In the meantime, the investigation pro- ceeded without bringing any further material to light and, finally—as they had to be brought before the court—Shiron and Tindle were arraigned. When Shiron pleaded guilty to the drunk charge and paid a $25.00 fine, Sergt. Clark was sure that this was the drug thief. The charge against Tindle was dismissed. As the two men walked out of the police building, a third man fell into step with them. He was Thomas Lane, who had been before the LITTLE, HAUGLAND & KERR, LTD.
