Janet Creek, a small tributary of the Stewart about
15 miles above Mayo, offers an Opportunity to develop a
head of 220 feet by the construction of 2 miles of ditch or
pipeline through difficult country. The capacity of the

site is estimated at 240 horse-power at ordinary minimum _Letter
flow, or 720 horse-power at ordinary six months flow.
With storage in Janet Lake, the dependable capacity might

be raised to about 1,400 horse-power.

The Pelly River, in its upper course, is reported to have
rapids at several canyon locations. The river is said to
have a fall of 20 feet in three-quarters of a mile at Hoole
Canyon offering a power potential of possibly 800 horse-
power at ordinary minimum flow, or 2,800 horse-power at
ordinary six months flow. Rapids also are indicated on
the Ross River, a tributary of the Pelly. No investigations
have been made on these rivers, and information is too
meagre to make estimates of power, apart from the tentative
figures which have been given above for Hoole Canyon.

A former development of 3,180 horse-power on Twelve
Mile River near Dawson was Operated for a number of
years, during open water, by the Yukon Gold Company
in connection with its gold-dredging operations. An
extensive system of flumes up to 10 miles in length carried
water to the plant, where an operating head of 680 feet
was secured under fullload conditions. The plant is
now dismantled. This is an illustration of how power can
be developed in the territory if the market, in this case

placer gold-dredging, is able to bear the heavy capital cost
involved.

Power Markets——Markets for power in the Yukon s
River Drainage would appear to depend almost entirely
on the development of the mineral resources of the region.
Present needs in the Dawson area are met by the hydro-
electric plant of Yukon Consolidated Gold Corporation
previously described. Small oilfuel installations of 290
horse-power at Whitehorse and of 110 horse-power at
Mayo supply the normal needs of these two communities.
