However, there just might be a chance, so hell ask Dr. Anderson to just slip in for a minute. Might as well know the truth. The obliging Howard is gone but a minute, to return with his well-fed-looking friend, he of the horn-rimmed specs. It takes a little coaxing to overcome Dr. Anderson’s professional scruples, but it’s managed eventually and with a very professional air Doc Anderson dons a very professional gadget which permits him to look into the patient’s eyes. The diagnosis is confirmed. The aged victim has a cataract and Dr. Anderson gives a lengthy disserta- tion on the subject, informing the now thoroughly frightened victim that the nerves of the eye have a direct relation to the sciatic nerve and as the blindness in- creases paralysis will set in. There is just one chance in a thousand for a cure—the radium cure. He has a small sample of the life-giving fluid with him in his car, but of course its use is out of the question. There is the barrier of medical ethics, etc., etc. At a wink from neat little Mr. Howard, Anderson breaks off his conversation to remark: “Just a minute—I think I have a pamphlet on the subject in my car—it gives an outline of all the cures effected by this magical means.” When Anderson steps out to the car, it’s the cue for Howard to high presure the victim. “You know, Mr. Rallison,” whispers the little Texan, with friendly insistence, “you were speaking to the one man in North America who has had success with this new medium. It’s a chance in a lifetime. If we can promise that not a word of this leaks out—I think we can persuade him to give you the treatment right here in your own home.” It’s a tempting situation, and these two scoun— er, gentlemen have now got their victim where they want him—thoroughly scared and amenable. But there’s one bar- rier—the question of money. Howard has to work fast for the cue was for a three- minute absence. Howard will try and get Anderson to do the complete job. for $500 .. . Rallison says he hasn’t got that amount. Then $400 . $300. It works down to about $70. . . . No go. Rallison is an honest old chap with but little means, and he prefers to leave his fate in the hands of Divine Provi- dence rather than go into debt. At that moment our good friend Dr. Anderson swings open the living-room door and re- ports that the pamphlet is missing and he remembers having lent it to one of the lead- ing eye specialists at Mayo Brothers when he was last in Rochester. And the signal from Howard to his fat friend says plainly “No dice.” “Well, Mr. Rallison,” remarks Ander- son, with a brotherly pat on the old man’s shoulder, “I suggest you see a specialist as soon as possible, and make arrangements for BALMORAL HOTEL John Tonzetich, Proprietor Comfortable Rooms Reasonable Rates LICENSED PREMISES NANAIMO, B.C.
