This service, %m important part of the Ministry of Transportation anda Highway Air Service Branch, has been going since 1977. It operates through a team ap- ‘proach designed to make sure top-level medical care—in many cases life-saving care— is availahle to British Col- umbians no matter where they live in the province. Cassiar Private Hospital uses the service to tranfer patients who may be seriously injured or ill for urgent treatment and who would benefit from the facilities available in a larger hospital. The doctor in Cassiar first contacts the specialist in a particular centre, discusses the problem and arrange- ments for transfer are put into motion. The patient may be sent to Whitehorse, Prince George or Vancouver de- pending on the nature of the problem. Whitehorse is a regional centre with the limited specialist facilities of two general surgeons and an obstetrician. In the case of a sick newborn infant needing immed- iate specialised care, the baby would be transferred to the neonatal intensive care unit at Vancouver General Hospital,as this is the only specialised unit for newborns in the province. To arrange the transfer of this sick infant, the Cassiar. doctor first contacts the specialist paediatrician at V.G.H. and tien the air-evac service in Victoria. The time is 11:55 a.m. The air ambulance dispatcher logs the details and within ‘minutes: sets in motion an operation which will utilize the talents of a small army of skilled professionals. who provide the service — the dispatchers , the pilots and the medical personnel— all of whom must act with crisp efficiency to organise a mercy flight. The Air Services Branch provides the aircraft , the pilots and the ground support staff and the Emergency Health Services Commission of the health ministry, the medical personnel. The air branch decide that, for the case of this sick infant, a Citation 500 aircraft would be used for the two hour flight to Watson Lake. It would first touch down at Vancouver to pick up V.G.H.s High Risk Infant Transfer Team— a specialist group equipped with an incubator and otiier medical supplies and also a representative who, in this case, was a paramedic, Because the citation jet cannot land at Cassiar air- port, a helicopter was chartered to fly the paramedic from Watson Lake to Cassiar, pick up the baby and take it back to Watson Lake to link up with the Citation for the return flight to Vancouver. The helicopter arrived in Cassiar around 5:00 p.m. In summer, a twin engine aircraft can land in Cassiar and patients may be transferred directly to Prince George or Whitehorse by these aircraft. The method of transfer always depends on the weather, the availabilitv of aircraft, the severity of the : patient's illness and where the patient is going. A key factor in the air ambulance service is its 24 hour availability and it has first priority in the Air Ser- vices Branch. The branch has 22 pilots and crews on duty from 7:00 am. until midnight seven days a week and standby crews on call at all times, Aircraft — specially equipped Citation 500's with modified wider doors to accomodate stretchers —are ready to roll at any hour and a plane can be on its way as little as 30 minutes after an evacuation request comes in, ee SS SENIOR CITIZENS!
