The announcement - was made on behalf of Regional R.A. Gorley - Assistant Ranger The fire attack system in the Lower Post Ranger District .is now complimented by a three man Heli- copter Rappel Team. The team, sometimes known as a "Spider Crew", includes Al Gorley, Assistant Ranger at Lower Post, and Initial Attack Crewmen Ron Last and Ray Betemps. The purpose of the team is to place small, highly trained initial attack personnel on fires which have diffi- cult access for conventional crews. One of the biggest values of such a team may be to construct helicopter access for other crews. Using this system a two man crew can be placed within a few feet of a fire, even "The new office has been made ~ necessary by the designation of northern B.C. under the federal Regional Development Incentives Act, and the signing of two im- portant agreements between the Department of Regional Economic terrain. Ms. Campag- . nolo congratulated the residents of Dease Lake for their tireless efforts in getting the hall built and invited the children of the town to assist her in cutting the ribbon. After refreshments, Ms. Campagnolo conducted an informal meeting, dealing with the problems of C.M.H.C., Communications and the Postal system. On August 17,’a meeting was held by representatives of the Ministry: of Municipal Affairs and Housing to inform Dease Lake- residents of departmental policy regarding future development in the Commun- ity. Mr. Ron O'Genski stated that Municipal Affairs will now be re- sponsible for the planning and dis- posal of all future residential They plan to provide an inventory of residential lots in Dease Lake so that people wishing to locate in the area need only apply for a lot ona first come, first serve basis. Committee members elected Dave Frazier as Chairman and Lillian McPhee as Secretary. The postponement of the bonus bid land auction, originally scheduled to be held on August 9, proved to be a boon to local resi- dents in Dease Lake. People from outside the community who were interested in acquiring land there were handicapped in learning the new date of August 23, since it was advertised in Dease Lake only. Local residents had a fairly clear field in the bidding which was generally low, although one family had to plunk. down One Thousand and Fifty-five Dollars in order to get the option on the lot of their choice. The big surprise of the evening was that three of the twenty-eight lots actually received no bids. After the reading out of the terms and conditions of sale by a member of the Lands Branch, Dave “Frazier asked if the department was prepared to enforce them. The representative answered yes but in the discussion which followed it soon became apparent that the Lands Branch has no clear definit= jon of the length of time involved in permanent residence. Tom Brown - suggested that the B.C. Residency’ Act would provide an honest crit- era. The representatives con- sidered this a good solution and agreed to present the proposal to their superiors on their return to Victoria. The Department of Education sent some good news. And then on. December 7, 1976 Bud Cullen, Minister of Manpower and Immigration, said in the House of Commons, "I suppose one can make statistics prove ‘anything, but the unemployment rate for men for twenty-five years of age and over - and I suggest with respect that these are bread-winners - dropped...” These statements come as a complete setback to the gains that have been made in the struggle for equal rights. It may be possible to understand the sexist attitude of Marcel Lambert, who suggested in 1972 that women wouldn't need abortion reform if they just kept their legs together: But what is incomprehensible and, indeed, shocking is that a government can _ explain away its failure to deal with unemployment by encouraging the notion that women are second- ary earners ‘and second-class citizens. A correspondence program will be set up for the Junior Secondary grades and a supervisor hired locally. WELCOME * For just as high unemployment breeds racism, so does it breed sexism and the attitude that women should be the first to-go regard- less of economic necessity or the desire to work. To regard unemployment as an unavoidable factor of the economic system is not a solution to the problem. .The right to work is a fundamental principle of any demo- cratic society. Surely, the aim of any employment policy must be to maintain and expand employment opportunities regardless of sex. As long as any government in Canada suggests that women are workers of secondary importance, it can be - assumed that women in Canada are not even close to achieving equality.
