What the girlfriend Says I know what a lot of you are thinking - where did this movie come from? I was thinking the same thing myself when Cameron suggested that we watch it. The truth is that it was not very well advertised; I did not see a single preview or poster for it. Was this an act of stupidity or sheer genius? Ihave yet to determine the answer to that. This film takes place five hun- dred years in the future. When the - majority of people think about the future they see flying cars, giant glass buildings and humans wear- ing shiny matching silver jump- suits. This is definitely not the OVER THE EDGE February 9, 2007 that is filled with, well, idiots. It is based on the idea that mostly stupid people are reproducing due to lack of knowledge and morals. Meanwhile, all of the smart people are planning chil- dren around finances and popula- tion control instead of urges. This leads to a growing population that is continuously getting more and more idiotic. Luke Wilson stars as Joe Bauers (also known as Not Sure). He is frozen in the present time, along with a prostitute named Rita (Maya Rudolph). The two wake up five hundred years later to find a population with an incredibly low IQ. Joe Bauers is quickly named the smartest man alive and becomes part of the presidential The world has gone to Hell and What the boyfriend Says it is Bauers job to fix it. From gar- bage avalanches, to crop failures there are many things for Bauers to occupy his time with. While he is doing this he catches glimpses of future pop culture. He discov- ers that the most popular TV show of this time is called “Ow, My Balls” and consists of a guy get- ting hit continuously in the, well, you know. As well, Starbucks has turned into a whore house and Costco is now the size of a small city and contains a subway. I found this movie to be hilari- Disclaimer - “The epinions exoressed do ‘not necessarily reflect the views of the writers, or hopefully anyone” KyRA JANOT AND JosEpH WRITER AND CONTRIBUTER We are of the mind, as many of you surely are, that there are things in this world that are over- rated...the discussion of which is the most overrated of all. Thus, with what space and time we have, we embark on just such a discussion...at the danger of sounding hypocritical, obnoxious, and above all irrelevent. But then again, you’re reading a university paper; the New York Times. this is not, and good thing too. That is to say, those that we miss. Now. if you look to your left you'll see a distraction...*erstwhile columnists run away* This movie imagines a future . fae pe eee: Se ors’ ought 1f wou another stupid comedy consisting of an endless array of fart jokes and many scenes of nudity. This is definitely not another teen com- edy; instead it indirectly makes fun of teen comedies and every- thing they stand for., If this movie becomes too: scary for you (because a world tun by hillbillies can be quite frightening) just remember that these events will most likely not actually occur. Global warming will have killed us all long before that point! I give this movie five “Yee- Haws” out of five Kristy is right: this movie emerged out of near complete ob- scurity. Many blame Fox for their treatment of the film in regards to marketing. Really, I don’t know who is to blame but that really doesn’t matter right now. The film is in video stores and we now have easy access to it. So go, get it! The film is the brainchild of Mike Judge. This is the man be- hind such cultural classics as Of- fice Space and — dare I go there? — Beavis and Butthead. With a few exceptions, namely the latter of my previous examples as-well he unfortunately popular of the Hill television series, Mike Judge makes some very funny comedies. Idiocracy is a funny film with a message that should be apparent to even the most chal- lenged among us. Joe Bauers (Luke Wilson) is your average Joe (very clever, Judge, very clever). He’s simple, but educated, at least mostly. An army experiment gone wrong thrusts him far into the new mil- lennium where the entire planet has been dumbed-down by com- mercialism and automated ma- chines. It is the sort of future that Isaac Asimov: would have en- visioned, although maybe not so tastelessly. The most apparent part of this film you will notice is the film’s budget. Perhaps Fox didn’t mar- ket this film because it didn’t cost 56 million dollars to make. Some of the scenes in the film call for special effects but their imposition onto the screen seems farcical. It is hard to punish this film for a feature that is merely a financial cause. There are two reasons for this: 1) The low-quality special effects and overall cheapness of the film creates a distinct look of he film. At times it seems almos a homage to 1980’s apocalyptic heavy metal films. And 2) The low budget of the film is an indication at the trouble of making this film which makes it a much more ef- fective message. Consider for a moment a film that Fox would have thrown mil- lions of dollars into. I imagine you all see nearly the same thing; a film full of explosions and snappy one liners. In essence, a film so dumbed down that every man, woman, and child can relate to and amuse themselves with. Judge chose to make a film with a point that conflicts with the interest of big-Hollywood. People with a pessimistic view of the future should enjoy this movie and bask in the smug glow of knowing that others agree with your idea of where the world is heading. People who also have a seething hatred of teenagers who hang out in local malls should watch this movie since it will give those people a good reason to knock their trendy, “But I’m Dif- ferent!”, bandanas off. 4 Starbuck lattes out of 5.
