clothes of the victim would indicate a sadis-
tic turn of mind on the part of the mur-
derers,” read Garrett.

“Now you can see how the writer
progressed in his deductions,” Tuohey re-
marked. “He convinced himself at the be-
ginning of his enquiries that more than one
person was engaged in the commission of
the crime. He reasoned thus because he saw
extensive minor damage done to the bushes
and ground at the scene of the crime. Then
he makes the statement: ‘It is believed that
some men, etcetera.’ See how he followed
this line of reasoning—that there was more
than one person concerned in the crime—
merely because of the disturbed nature of
the ground and bushes where the body was
discovered. Now in his first statement he
made no mention of the girl’s missing clothes
and shoes, and raised no question as to what

had become of those articles. Yet many in-
vestigators would have considered this to be

_ a much more important question than, say,

the probable number of those engaged in the
crime, or the reason why the broken wristlet
watch stopped at a particular hour. It was
an extraordinary omission. Now in_ his
second statement he thought of the clothes,
and, after a preliminary search, he is at a
loss to account for their absence. Some ex-
planation must be forthcoming and revert-
ing tc the ‘clue’ from which all his deduc-
tions originated—the disturbed nature of
the ground—he gives that amazing account
of what he believes to be the reason why the
clothes are missing. This latter part of the

“statement is in direct opposition to that

which has gone before. If the writer be:
lieved one person to be engaged in the actual
killing it would be reasonable to assume that
that person was possessed of a sadistic mind,
but he believed that several were responsible,
and, whilst it is reasonable to assume that
one person might have acted so, it is not
conceivable that each of two or more men
would be possessed of a sadistic mind. The
belief that several were implicated precludes
the possibility that the girl’s clothes were
carried off for that purpose. It was much
more likely that if several were concerned
that each member would do his best to dis-
associate himself from anything which
would connect him in any way with the
crime. If, say, five men were implicated,
one of them might be inclined to dispose of
the clothes as the writer suggests, but the

four others would not, and would discour
the one man from carrying away the clot
in case the discovery of the clothing or ,
part of it would expose them all. E
