Campus Spotlight over THE EDGE - Wednesday, November 30 , 1994 17 UNBC PRESS CHRONICLES historic book launched BIRTH ~_by Manpreet Sidhu__ Manpreet Sidhu UNBC Press came out with its first publication in mid-November. . A University is Born is a landscape-format coffee-table book that tells a pictorial story of the university featuring such events as the sod-turning, the Queen's visit and the first day of classes. Over forty people were present at a book signing in the Atrium of the Administration building on Friday at 4:30. Dr. Clive Keen, Director of Communications, came up with the inception of this book. At one point he had over 3 000 good colour photos of the university, "It's always been in the back of my mind that something like this might work," He chose 180 pictures that he eventually narrowed down to 120. "They've all got impact," said Keen. "They come together to tell a story." Over ninety per cent of the photographs in the book were taken by Tim Swanky, a freelance photographer contracted to. do progress photos of the university, When he was hired three years ago, he did not know that these pictures would be collected into a book. "It's great. I just saw it for the first time a half an hour ago." Additional shots are provided by Bob Ingraham, Philomena Hughes and. the photographers of the Prince George Citizen. Clive Keen said that he had an idea of which photos would be included in this book and began collecting them over the summer. The last photographs were taken on September 8th, Keen said. From there the creation of the book was very quick. Within two weeks he had the rough layout completed. Dennis and Muntener Advertising were subcontracted to complete the layout and get the book printed. Roman Muntener polished up the layout. The entire 116 page book was laid out on computer and sent to a printer in Jasper because there is no full- colour printer in Prince George. Muntener is quite pleased with the outcome. “It's unique because it's not a book with pictures and text. It's segments of the young life of the university." There was a great need to have the book printed by mid-November so that it would be ready for the * Christmas market. The UNBC Press has the potential for further publications, Keen says but he prefers to see how successful this book is. "The commercial success of this one will allow us to produce other publications," he said. There was a 3 000 print run on this particular book and that is quite a large number for a small press. All of the royalties will be donated to a student bursary fund. These books will be available in the UNBC Bookstore and downtown Bookstores like Mosquito Books and Books on Fourth. Cost of the book is $35 for softback and $60 for hardback. Royalties will go towards a student bursary fund that has already been set up. ‘ photo by Brent Braaten Above, Media Officer Rob van Adrichem is shown signing someone's book.
