_. The bed of McLennan Riyer is shallow, dazzling
in places with mica-flakes; in others pink, with
small garnet crystals. The river-flats are mostly
mall and timbered. The channel is tortuous and
fall slight. Main tributaries are Mica, Swift, and
Tete Creeks, shallow, rapid, and mountain-confined,

_ except near the mouth, where the land is low and
_inarshy. <A block of about 314 miles square, locally
‘| Jmown as Starvation Flats, drained by two creeks,

formerly flooded, due to beaver-work, is practically
_ a prairie with sandy loam soil.

CRANBERRY LAKE AND CAMP CREEK.

- Cranberry Lake, on the divide between McLentian
and Canoe Rivers, is really a flooded muskeg, 114
| miles square, with low marshy shores and greatest
| depth of 5 feet. East of the lake is a muskeg a
mile square. The lake is of beaver construction,
| most of the beaver-work being at the east end, and
_ it would be feasible to drain it to the McLennan or
Canoe and convert it into a hay meadow. At the
| west end the swamp land has dried and grows good
| hay. Benches in vicinity of Cranberry Lake are
| of clay loam and make good farms when cleared.
‘| Timber is denser than on the flat. The valley-floor
is sandy, with clay subsoil. The area is well
watered. Hast of the valley between Swift Creek
; and Canoe River some good land, heavily timbered,
is found on benches. Swift Creek, the post-office
and settlement, has a school and stores, also hot
_ Springs. Meteorological records are kept here.
' In 1919 the highest temperature recorded was 93°,
_ the lowest —47°; precipitation, 11.44 inches of
| rain and 54 inches of snow.

5 The valley of Camp Creek, which the Canadian
National Railway crosses to its head at Albreda
' Summit after crossing Canoe River, is narrow, with
| mountains rising abruptly on either side. The
_ ereek, about 50 feet wide, carries much mica at
high water. The valley, altitude about 2,700 feet,
- tapers from about a mile wide at the mouth to half
a mile wide at the summit, 12 miles up. On the
east the land rises in jack-pine benches, one bench
at the mouth extending across the Canoe and east-
ward, having width of 2 miles, carrying a good
‘stand of timber, which extends up the flanks of
Canoe Mountain. Some good timbered bench is
- found on the west. There are some good hay
meadows along the creek. Settlers have cleared
land at several points in the valley. Several tribu-

_ tary creeks flow in from the west.
