If you wish to give your pre-schoolers and first graders a good start in their awaken- ing curiosity about your Christian fa- ith, here are some suggestions: They come from the Pre-School Intr- oduction to the Canadian Catechism which is used in the Catholic Church across Canada. (Paulist Press 1968, National Office of Religious Educa- tion). Some of the things to be avoi- ded are often part of our own child- hood education and we would easily re- | peat them without knowing their ef- fect on today's children. a Regular Sunday Worship ble. If they are to- ion Show for inviting us to have a sales table. Id these stories before their signif- icance can be understood, they will eventually dismiss them as children stories. By the time the moment comes for fuller understanding of the mean- ing behind them, the children will be bored after having heard them several times. -We speak to them of Jesus, in con- ction with what the children know of him and this is mostly in the context of Christmas, his birthday. We avoid telling them about his life and mira-. cles, since these events will be care- fully selected and presented in the formal instructions of Grades 1 to 4. Before we can tell them about Jesus' birthday, we need to help the child a great deal by bringing him into a rel- ationship with God our Father from him all good things come and to him we are all to return. God does in fact begin to emerge in the mind of a 5 year old, as someone who is all of Daddy and Mommy rolled into one, and objectively this is correct, because in God is contained the perfection of all human fatherhood and motherhood. The more favorable the relationship between father and mother, the easier it is to convey the concept of fatherhood in God. - In relation to the Christmas sto- ry, there is no need to dwell on expl- anations of Christ being both God and man, or coming as Savior: neither do we elaborate on the deprivation of surroundings at birth, e.g. straw, co- 1d, stable, manger. - Your approach will be simplified by presenting Jesus as a gift from the Father. If you have spoken often to the children of the gifts of God our Father in creation such as: the sun, the sky, the moon, stars, mountdins, colors, Mom and Dad, the animals, the food we eat; you will now be able to reveal the wonderful secret of the Father, the greatest gift of all that he has given, his son whom we call Jesus. : - All five year olds know that gifts are exchanged at Christmas, and we can tell them that this is so be- cause God our Father first gave us the greatest of all gifts at Christmas. = McLellan, Laurie Fitzsimmons. Or when you are nagged to death by little ones ' who want everything they see advertised: ...do you feel a little like Ebeneezer Scrooge, and think to yourself, 'Christ- mas! Humbug!' Maybe you can recall a feeling of disappointment and of emptiness that Boxing Day brought last year... Everyone who catches even the faintest essence of what Christmas really is can testify.that its special significance can only be captured in the depths of one's soul. Having grown up in a rather non-rel- - igious home, and not really meeting Jesus the Father, the Son or the Spirit. Wi- Thank you to everyone who helped with the tea, Bake and Rummage Sale, for the All -Saints' Anglican Church. Christ until I was a teenager, I can recall the profound difference Christ made in my appreciation of Christmas. Without an intimate and personal reali- zation that our Lord, best Friend, and Brother, has been born into the world, and into the hearts and lives of all who will receive Him; the peace, joy, and abundance of Christmas, and indeed, the real meaning of life itself, is but an empty space we can never seem to fill. A hunger we can never seem to satisfy. Now I'm not suggesting that anyone ‘take an annual dose of religion to count- eract the Christmas blues. But I am suggesting that Christmas blues are only one example of the absence of meaning and purpose that pervades our lives when we try to find peace and happiness with- out God. Jesus said: "I have come that you might have life in abundance." It is His birth, His love, and joy, and peace that brings the true and lasting meaning of Christmas into our lives and homes. The angels saw a world forlorn Before the Son of God was born. The lame to run, the blind to see, He came to earth to set us free. The sky was bright angel choirs, And Hell can never match the fires That blaze in humble hearts for Him Who released the world from sin O Lord we ask this Christmas morn That you might in our hearts be born. GANHHONHHOGHHOGA Native Writers Needed | ‘There are a great many families in ‘the Cassiar Courier coverage area whose descendants lived here for many generations before a road, an airplane, a car, or a white face turned up. In fact, the majority of the permanent population of Cas- siar country is of Native descent. If the Courier is: to serve and to be of interest to this area, we should have more input from Native people - about Native culture, art, history, skills, activities, hopes, ‘problems and ideas. It's important that Native peo- ple be the ones to write about themselves, too. ' We hope Native people will come forward, get involved and be a part of the Cassiar Courier.
