the Voice of Cassiar Country DECEMBER 1986 10 cents SPECIAL INTERNATIONAL EDITION AWARDS PRESENTED Cassiar Mining Corporation recognizes twenty Year Service Awards only. Three employees attained their twenty year award in 1986. Each employee, along with his partner and two guests, was invited for cocktails and a seven course dinner, served at the Directors Lodge (House 130). The individual ns Ray and Mary Elhorn Ray arrived in Cassiar from Wanham, Alberta on October 26th, 1966. Initially, Ray hired on as a haulage truck driver before progressing on to become a shovel operator. In August, 1973, Ray accepted the position of Mine Shifter which he still holds at present. Ray attributes much of his success to his wife, Mary. Together they have raised their family in Cassiar; one daughter, Kate, and two sons, Warwick and Russell. ‘You can always find Ray and his family enjoying the outdoors. NEW EXPLORATION COMPANY FORMED Recently Cassiar Mining Corporation, in association with Consolidated Brinco Limited, formed a mineral exploration company, Western Canadian Mining (WCM) Ltd. By transferring certain mineral exploration proper- ties to WCM, it received a 50% interest in the company. Consolidated Brinco Limited also transferred all its un- developed mineral properties to WCM and owns the other 50%. During 1986, WCM completed exploration on three promising gold properties in Western Canada. Currently plans to fund several exploration projects owned by WCM are being finalized. EPA HEARINGS Initial hearings held by the Environmental Protec- tion Agency (E.P.A.) were concluded in July and sub- sequent cross-examination hearings concluded October 21st, 1986. The E.P.A. has acknowledged that a number of aspects of their original proposal to ultimately ban the use of asbestos were based on erroneous information.and have commissioned further studies in four separate areas. As a result, the recommendation of the E.P.A. panel con- ducting the hearings is expected to be delayed and a published ruling by the E.P.A. is not expected until late in 1987, at the earliest. During the same time, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration in the United States (OSHA) has published new standards, and although the controls are more rigorous, they allow the controlled use of asbestos. The Asbestos Information Association (U.S.) has filed an appeal against certain aspects of the OSHA new employ- ment exposure standards. recipient of the Service Award was presented with a jade clock (Cassiar jade) while their spouses received alovely bouquet of red roses and,éarnations. Paul Friscka a but it was not until his third trip, January 28th, 1966 that he decided to stay. Initially he was hired as a mine labor- er before progressing to his present occupation of tram- line operator. Paul raised his two sons, Gabor and Szilard here in Cassiar. Paul arrived in Cassiar on three separate occasions; Ae ae Tt oe & Francis and Ann Gleason Francis joined the company on the 4th of Feburary, 1966 as a heavy duty mechanic, a position he still holds today. ~~ , Francis and his wife, Ann, and their two children, son Chris and daughter, Lois, came to Cassiar from Mile 101 on the Alaska Highway where Francis had been em- ployed as a mechanic. Francis and Ann have for several years Operated a Charter Riverboat Service on the Stikine River under the name of Trina Ann Excursions. CHRISTMAS SHUTDOWN ANNOUNCED In a notice to all employees, Cassiar Mining Corpora- tion announced that the December shutdown would be limited to the festive season only. Cassiar Mine will shut down operations at 4:00 p.m., Wednesday, December 24, 1986 and resume operations at 8:00 a.m., Friday, January 2, 1987. Waste crews will be scheduled to commence work on January 5, 1987. Cassiar has been able to maintain its portion of the reduced world markets, the company advised. As well, additional people have been added to the Marketing staff and the company is actively pursuing other market areas. _ NEW APPOINTMENTS Cassiar Mining Corporation announced the appoint- ment of Bill Zemenchik as Mine Manager effective Sept- ember 1, 1986. Bill has been with the Cassiar organization for 19 years and held a number of positions including Training Instructor, Equipment. Superintendent and, since 1979, Plant Superintendent. Bill has obtained a full appreciation, not only for the problems associated with operating a mine, but also the problems peculiar to living in a Northern community. Cassiar Mining Corporation announced the promotion of John Minaar to the position of Plant Superintendent effective September 1, 1986. : John was employed in the Zambian mining industry for a number of years prior to relocating to Cassiar in 1976. He has held a number of positions including Elec- trical Foreman; General Electrical Foreman; Assistant Maintenance Superintendent - Electrical; and since 1981 Assistant Plant Superintendent - Services.
