Traditional activities such as skiing, skating, building snowpersons and collecting food. But, wait you say. Food collecting isn’t a traditional winter activity!! Well, some of us at UNBC are trying to make it so. Last year a number of individuals were successful in coordinating an effort to collect food and other items for those less fortunate. The student, staff and faculty of UNBC were very generous last year and over 400 pounds of nonperishable food items were collected and delivered to two non-profit agencies in Prince George. Both agencies were most appreciative of these donations, which were delivered to them the week before Christmas. ~ This year’s food hamper drive is already under way. You may have seen some of the collection boxes at various locations around the campus. All food collected this year will be donated to the food bank it will be available to any needy person in Prince George, including students. As PGPIRG’s presence on creipys is Heingrfelt, thianern’s campaign will not only be about the collection of food, but also about the effects of povertyrgn us all. And poverty does affect us all. One of the results of poverty is poor nutrition. Studies have shown that poor nutrition has a strong negative effect on students abilities to learn. High rates of poverty have also been linked to higher crime rates, and higher health care costs. PIRG will be sponsoring information tables over the next few weeks to raise our awareness of the effects of poverty, and to encourage you to make donations. This campaign isn’t aimed only at students. This is a UNBC community project, and the UNBC community is comprised of many facets, including not only students, but also faculty and staff from a variety of departments. We should all be concerned about poverty, and will hopefully all be willing to donate something. So as you look outside and contemplate what you want to do next, remember the new traditional activities as well as the old. As you pick up the books -and head for class, grab a can of soup for the food hamper. As you’re pulling on those gloves or mittens, pull a box of cereal off the shelf for those less fortunate. And as you are heading off to hear the Great Santa Claus Debate on December 7, remember to bring a nonperishables food item to show your generosity and support.
