The Cassiar Mine operations were the recipients of many sincere congratulations at the Annual Awards Dinner — - _ 1979 Safety Competition for Open Mines and Quarries — hosted by the Ministry of Energy Mines and Petroleum Resources at the Hotel Vancouver, Wednesday, April 2, 1980. The attendance of seme 170 people, representatives of open pit mines and quarries, as well as senior officials of the Department of Mines, Inspection Branch, heard Mr. Bill Robinson, Chief Inspector, announce that Cassiar Mine operations received the Senior Award for 1979. Dur- ing 1979 Cassiar Mine recorded 1,297,975 man hours, 11 compensable injuries, for a frequency of 8.47 per 1 000,000 man hours — an enviable record. It was certainly an honour, and pleasure, for me to see Peter Jones, Mine Manager, with Ben McCormack, Chair- man of the U.S.W.A. Safety Committee, and Don Toth, the Safety Supervisor, step forward to receive the award from Mr. Roy Illing, Deputy Minister of Energy Mines and Petroleum Resources. Photographs of this presentation will be available, which will give wide recognition to the event and the efforts of all employees who made the award to Cassiar possible. On behalf of Cassiar Asbestos Corporation Limited, I join -with others in congratulating all concerned, and can only say “Keep up the good work”. It is rewarding to me to note that for the first 3 months of 1980 no compensable injuries have been recorded, and with this continuing ~ safety effort an award to Cassiar is certainly possible. J. D. Little, President. “~ N.B. The last time Cassiar qualified for this award was in 1965. This goal could not have been achieved without the joint effort of the Union and Management at Cassiar Asbestos. e In This Issue Television Page 2. Social Page 3. School Advisory Page 4.
