UNBC Triathlon/Duathlion Club Is Running Ahead By Jessica Johnson “Some people like to run. Others like to eat hamburgers. We like to do both.” This is the slogan for the UNBC Triathlon Cliub’s 1st Annual Fat Albert Challenge. It is not often that this character is associated with athleticism, so what does Fat Albert have to do with running, swimming and cycling, you ask? Organizers of this brand new club are planning this event as a fundraiser to help send the ath- ‘letes to. the University of BC in March. UBC will be host.to the Legacy Games TriathlonfDuathlon Championships, where athletes from UVic, UBC, and U of A will also be present. This is the sea- son-long goal for the UNBC Triathlon Club members. The Fat Albert Challenge is first in a series of fundraising events that will enable the mem- bers of the club to work towards this goal, and is tentatively scheduled for the evening of Sunday, November 16th. For people still wondering about the idea of Fat Albert in an athletic competition, don’t worry... He won't actually be there. The 2.5 km course consists of four stations every 625m ‘where participants are required to eat a hamburger before contin- uing their run. Jordie Fraser, who has orga- nized the club this season, as well as this new event, says that “the event intends to provide a dinner for a student and four of their friends, moderate exercise to help work off the dinner, and free products/coupons from sponsors.” Awards and door prizes will also be provided from sponsors of the event. “The club encourages students to come out and support the event and student life at UNBC,” says Fraser. This is the first season for the Triathlon/Duathlon Club. There are currently between 15. and 25 members, arid of course, those interested newcomers are always welcome.” * The club has a swim coach who meets with them twice a week, concentrating on stroke improvement and fitness. They have also recently acquired a bike coach and are looking into starting spin classes at the local YMCA.
