With the outbreak of war he joined the 2nd C.M.R. and served for three years and two months in France, where he gained the Military Medal. Demobilized in 1919, he re-joined the police at Kamloops. Later he saw service at Prince Rupert, Duncan, Sidney, Cumberland, and Cow- ichan Lake. In 1929 the “P.M.L. 6” was built and assigned to Alberni to police the West Coast of Vancouver Island, and Constable Dunbar was placed in charge of it. Then the “P.M.L. 7” superceded the “P.M.L. 6” at Alberni, and “Alex” was promoted to Corporal and made skipper of the new vessel. For two years he patrolled the “Graveyard of the Pacific” in “No. 7 until 1934, when he was promoted to Ser- geant and placed in charge of the West Coast District.
