The National Energy Board will be holding a public -enquiry in respect to Canadian » oil supply and demand and re- lated aspects. This enquiry is in response to the request of Alastair Gillespie, Minis- ter of Energy, Mines and Re-. sources, that the Board invest igate and revort to him on the ringe of possible oil supply situ-tions over the course of the next 10 to 15 years which might develop for B.C. Mirex, a substance used as a flame retardant in »las- tics will be banned by reg- ulations passed by the Den't. of Health and Welfare. It has been found that Mirex caused a variety of effects such as cateracts in youngrats and foetal; abnormalities in.rsts during testing. Katimavik, the federal government's youth employ- ment and educstion program has been extended for another year. The programs assigns groups of young people to host communities where they help in major projects as well as provide volunteer service for the elderly, handicipped or for those who are underpriviliged. EDITORIAL ecoe IS APATHY THE CAUSE OF YOUR DISCONTENT ? ---00 the Community Club is raising its fees to $180.00 per year...that's an increase of 300%...and who cares? It seems very few people do, con- sidering the attendance at the last general meeting. Oh, there were rumbles in the curl- ing rink, and a few complaints over the back fence, and some | disgruntled remarks over many cups of coffee, but, really, very few people cared enough to address their complaints and protests to those who are at the very root of it ace Se Heme uUs Why is this club Pandan itself in debt 300% deeper than two years ago? Look into its financial statement.... salaries and maintenance costs take the largest chunk of pour recreation dollar. High sal- aries are going to personnel who are responsible for your recreation. Yet not more than (10% of club members bothered to ask them how the money is being spent. Did you ask them why certain clinics were held and paid for with no one att- ending? Did you ask them who paid the hotel bills for the 6 girls who went to Rendezvous? Who asked for the expensive bands in the bar? Who asked for the concerts which are put- ing the club in the red? What kind of a business is run ona continuing deficit like the Snack Bar? Your money is being spent faster than it can be made, and no one cares to even comment. "What choice do I have?", you say, "the money is taken off my pay cheque". If you made enough noise. about your needs and voreferences, the. club wouldn't be floundering around trying to entertain the interestsof 3-year-olds to fifty-year-olds with trial and error methods. Far too much money has been wasted in this regard, and is totally NORENNOEE Community College in Terrace has been named as one recipient of a grant for a federally sponsored labour education program in post- secondary educational instit- utions. Northwest receives $11,500 under the program. Barney Danson has informed the House that Italian im- migrants normally resident in Canada would no longer be subject to the obligation of Italian military service, even though they might be enjoying dual citizenship. Until now there has been some liability on the part of Italian landed immigrants resident in Canada when they unnecessary. The staff at the C.C.C. need input of various sorts in order to function properly. They need to know what. the community at large requires in the way of rec- reation, AND they also need to have.a roster of volunteers on hand, to help out with many projects for which they now have to pay high wages. It seems ludicrous to have to pay someone to set up chairs for a meeting, and then have to send him back after the meeting to put the chairs away and clean up the butts off the floor. Services such as these are’ running the Club into the’ ground. If the C.C. doesn't get the input it re- . quires, it will yen fold. Perhaps as a solution to all this, we could start up an elitist Country Club rather than a Community Club. We- could charge $125.00 per month to a limited membership of say 700, and completely close all the facilities to. all other members of the com- munity. A couple of uniformed guards here and there would eliminate all problems of van- dalism and "crashing", and we no financial problems. This "solution" hardly fits the spirit of our community, ‘but, when it comes down to "bucks" to the tune of $72,000 it seems we can't afford Com- munity spirit any more, as we have known it. A club, ANY club, is only as good as its members. March 13, 1978 will be the next meeting and it is hoped that more people will attend . ‘than last time. If not, maybe a fee increase, of 600% will make people sit up. and take notice. YUKON GOVERNMENT NEWS A co-operative effort will soon be underway to determine interest in vocational train- ing throughout Yukon. Resid- ents of the territory and norther B.C. will be asked to sive their views on what they feel they need in the way of © vocational training courses to fit Yukon and northern B.C. conditions. The survey began Feb. 20 with the distribution of the questionnaire.
