February 21, 2000 UNBC Needs Goats Fellow Students: In discussing our school with friends of mine, it recently came to my attention that we, as an institution have a relative lack of domesticated goats (Capra hircus) on our campus. To whit, we have NO goats whatsoev- er in our school, or roaming wild about the land which we occupy here on our “hill of higher learning.” This may seem like a minor detail, a detail you would never consider when planning your further education, but, with pending student elections, | feel that this important issue deserves a higher profile. Our school needs goats! Goats are an important addition to any respectable campus. While our school currently has 0 (zero) goats, the University of Brandon, Manitoba has a flock of twenty for their goat LETTERS Letters To The Fdaitor studies program, the University of Victoria has twelve goats in connec- tion with their Masters program in English, and three for their under- graduate Oceanography program. They’re out flocking us 35-0, so why then hoofed animals. For many environmental concerns, goats give much needed per- spective in planning our course of action. How can we claim to make important land use decisions without input from our bearded friends? The idea that future foresters may be educated in a goat-classes do we have no Lif goats!? & ie Goats are not sim- = aS ply four legged — pe as UNBC Receives Thanks From Student It is time! It is time for a Tremendous Thank you to all the Staff, (Facilities, Security, Admissions, Cafeteria, Janitorial, Skills) who have been so helpful to me. My gratitude is beyond words. A tremendous vote of THANKS to the Student Population who have taken great heed of my medical issues (i.e. smoking, perfume etc.) and been very careful of my environ- ment. | can not tell you in mere words, how very grateful | am. To those to whom | have inadver- tently caused offense, my apologies. being able to breathe is very vital to me and | am unable to breathe around smoke. No | am not an asth- matic but | am highly allergic. My throat closes before the smoke even reaches my lungs and then | am left in a panic trying to get to clean air. | know that this issue can be bother- some. just ask me, | live in a constant state of alert, which is why my appre- ciation outweighs mere words. Thank you Florence Hill Do you have an opinion on student issues? Do you want your opinion heard? Over The Edge accepts Letters To The Editor from all students, staff and faculty of UNBC. Letters To The Editor can be submit- ted in any of the following methods: - In person to our office in the Wintergarden. Snail Mail: co To The Editor without studying the goat, the animal second most likely to go feral (after cats). Children’s Literature class with- out the “three Billy goats gruff” would be ludicrous, indeed, anthropology courses without one \ of our éarliest zy Dy: domesticated friends would be nothing more that 3 credits of wasted ay fis potential. S To further my point, a _ recent waste audit by our own PGPIRG found us sorely needing to reduce our waste. The environment damages caused by the thousands of students peopling our hallways can be dramatically reduced with the addition of several Page 5 natty-haired ruminants. Goats are well known for their abilities to eat almost any industrially produced product from processed cheese slices to aluminum cans. Next time you throw out your beverage contain- er, think of it as goat food rather than waste. How many meals have you stolen from these cute hollow horned animals? When you vote for your next NUGSS president, or any other stu- dent government position, make sure they are pro-goat, or don’t vote. It could make all the difference in the world. Thank you.for your careful consid- eration.
