10 arts & entertainment November 2, 2011 - Over the Edge STEPHEN MALKMUS IS BACK Mirror Traffic Kicks Previous Album to the Curb DARCIE SMITH ARTS EDITOR Stephen Malkmus and Pavement frontman Stephen Mal- kmus has returned to the spotlight with his lasted release Mirror Traffic. After 2008’s Real Emotional Trash, there was a bit of apprehension in- volved before listening to this album, however, all doubts have now van- ished. While I have always preferred Pavement over solo Stephan Malk- mus’ work, I found this album quite refreshing. It is not his best effort, but it still manages to catch you and it is nice to see him returning to his quirky old roots. Real Emotional Trash felt forced and over-thought, while Mir- ror Traffic seems to have come more naturally. The fun thing is that a good num- ber of the songs from Mirror Traffic UNBC UNBC"s Official Sports Talk radio show SPORT STUDIO the Jicks sound like old Stephen Malkmus or Pavement songs. “No One Is (As I Be Are)” has the familiar piano from “Freeze the Saints”, “Tune Grief” sounds like it could be quite cozy in the midst of Wowee Zowee, and “Brain Gallop” reminds me of “Speak, See, Remember.” Normally this can be a tired thing to hear from a band — sort of like how every Weakerthans song sounds like a Weakerthans song. It could be due to Real Emotional Trash just being so unmemorable but somehow, at the same time, a promin- ent enough release to make one yearn for the older sound. This album was produced by Beck, which could add to the mature, yet quirky feel of the album. The album was also initially going to be called L.A. Guns with “Senator” as the sin- gle. “Senator” is a great song, and while the chorus goes “I know what the senator wants/what the senator wants is a blowjob,” he is still saying something that causes you to think and listen. His nonsense lyrics return to grab you and sitck with you. The Pitchfork review of Mirror Traffic sums up the feelings of the al- bum quite adequately: “Mirror Traf- fic tickles [nostalgia] without sac- rificing maturity.” It is a satisfying, casual album and hopefully we can hear a few more like this from Malk- mus in the near future.
