Page 4 Cassiar Courier Cassiar Arts & Craft Centre | The Cassiar Town Council has established the dev- elopment of a Community Arts & Craft Centre as their number one priority for the 1978-79 term. Following is an outline to date of the news on this project. An application for a Canada Winter Works grant was submitted on June 23, 1978 by the Town Council’s Arts & Craft Committee for the amount . of $20,328.00, with the view in mind that these monies were to be allocated for site preparation, building foundations and interior and exterior work, This grant was approved. The chosen site for the new Craft Centre is the base of the McDame Ski Hill, adjacent to the west end of the school grounds. You will notice that . preparations have already begun on this site. - Cassiar Asbestos Corporation has donated two trailers approximately 20’ x 60’, as well as.a wash- car approximately 56’ x15’ for this project. These trailers were previously used as bunkhouses on the site where the newly erected bunkhouses in our community now stand. These two bunk- houses have been stripped of their internal walls, except for those needed for support, and now stand as two large halls behind Cassiar’s main gate - at binkskiites Renovations for the Weueae have been discussed. Completed, the washcar will facilitate the main entrance, a separate mens and. womens washroom, a cloakroom, large laundy tubs, a kiln, as well as storage area. Placement plans for the trailers on the site will __ see the washcar placed back on the site horizontal to Malozemoff Street. Each trailer will be placed - behind the washcar at right angles to either end. Thus, the overall appearance will be that of a U- shaped structure. This will leave a central area be- bye oS two trailers of Jet dinnehy 16’ x 60’. A fithes project of the ‘Town Count ‘that has been discussed, is facing the building, as well as building in the 16’ x60’ space between the trailers and ineCrPOraHng, this for future work areas. The Council fae recently Setased from Clinton Creek all the craft materials that were available for auction. Some of these include a kiln with an. internal capacity of 3’ x 3’ x 4’,.two electric start ‘potters wheels, two kick start potters wheels, a damp. clay storage box, pottery construction . tools, leather craft supplies, as well as darkroom photography supplies. The Stikine School District Gaperntendene. Mr. Dave Lynn, has already indicated an interest in renting the facility to assist the future develop- ment of the Art program for the Cassiar School - students. As well, the Northern Lights College has indicated an interest in offering night courses to the public, utilizing these facilities. As mentioned previously, these trailers are presently housed behind Cassiar’s main gate. Un- . fortunately, due to the strike, this has curtailed future development of the project. Until such time as we are able to move the trailers we will have to wait patiently and look forward to the time when we will see the completion of the Centre in our community. . More news, if available, in the next issue of the Courier. A High School class in music appreciation: was asked the difference between listening and hearing. At first there was no response. Finally, a hand went up and a -youngster offered this wise definition: “Listening is WANTING to hear”. REFLECTIONS “go 7 Isn’t it nice to see this local paper carrying on as usual, regardless of strikes and other ne that slow up small towns? For many the strike has meant pulling up stakes with hopes of a job elsewhere. But for others; they will remain with their “wait and see”’ attitude. Many, even at this early stage of the strike, have used that threadbare phrase “I’m bored”. My goodness what a sad commentary. on the productive and creative abilities of people today. We do have a library tabied with hooks ofa high interest and an entertaining level. There are so many absorbing activities a per- son can pursue at home - reading, macrame, painting (pictures or otherwise) or you might find that a correspondence course would prove to be an absorbing pursuit, Perhaps you will come up with an original idea of your — own. Also, with Christmas coming along soon, it might well be worth an effort to ESS a few gifts. If staying at home isn’t your “bap” -- why hot drop around to the Rec. Centre.
