Absolute silence was required and

David Hennessy, chief of police
there was murdered. The crime was
traced to The Mafia.

The trouble started when two
Italian secret criminal societies came
to loggerheads. One band of Italians
had ambushed another gang of their
fellow countrymen called Stoppaghera.
The severe police methods taken
brought vengeance of the societies
upon the head of the chief of police.

Same methods of terrorizing jurors
and witnesses were used then as now.

U.S. district attorneys now find
jurors either scarced to serve for fear
of mob reprisals if they turn in truth-
ful verdicts and witnesses scared to
give evidence for the same reason.

In the New Orleans case 11
Italians were charged with being im-
plicated in the murder of the police
chief. A terrorized jury acquitted six.

Threats to Victim’s Family

This incident was not enough to put
an end to operations of The Mafia.
The society continued its career of
extortion and crime, extortion forced
by the threat of mutilation or death
of a member of the selected victim’s
family if money was not forthcoming.
This continued to such an extent
that insensed New Orleans citizens

took no chance on the wheels of
justice being tampered with when

Italians were imprisoned — six

months later.

They raided the jail and lynched
11 of them.

The Black Hand

Often confused with The Mafia is
the Black Hand. As a society the
Black Hand is out of the picture,
although it is reported a few extor-
tioners with a flair for the dramatic
may make an impression of a hand on
a blackmailing note.

The original Black Hand was aimed
at uniting all Southern Slav districts
by no matter what means.
