Head Office: Standard Building Vancouver, B.C. NESS BRINTON Mills at Powell River British Columbia forced inwards and jammed, prevent- ing entrance. Bagley looked out the window and saw McLeod approaching. They would not have time to pry open the jammed safe door, so they abandoned their attempt and ran out on the sidewalk. Fawcett jumped in the car and started the engine, and Bagley ran across the street and inter- cepted McLeod. Without hesita- tion he clubbed McLeod a couple of times on the head with his automatic and McLeod slumped to the pavement. Bagley left him where he fell, and sprinted back to the car, which Fawcett had set in motion. He leapt on the running board and threw him- self forward along the hood. McLeod stagged to his feet and started back towards the hotel. From his position on the moving car, Bagley fired two shots at him, but missed both times. Constable Clark, now retired from R.C.M.P. and magistrate at Edmon- ton, was awakened by the ringing telephone bell beside his bed and when he answered, was told there was a man tied up in the theatre box office. He immediately phoned Constable Ellis, who lived a block away in the direction of the theatre, to meet him there as soon as possible. He then started to drag some clothes on as he hurried downstairs to the police office. When he was going down the stairs the phone rang again, and answering it was told by McLeod there were men in the liquor store. Realizing there was something serious going on, he grabbed a rifle from the rack, a handful of ammuni- tion, and ran to the door, but paused when the phone rang again. Someone else believed there was something wrong at the liquor store. As he picked up the rifle, the phone bell again jingled, but this time he did not hesitate but ran out to the gate and down the walk towards the liquor store, a good block away. On arrival he saw no one in the front of the store, so he ran around the back of the building to see if anyone was there. Seeing no one he circled the store and came back to the main street. Looking up towards the theatre he saw a car dart across the intersection headed West, watched by a group of men standing on the corner. When Ellis learned of the situation he ran back to the police station, got the car, and had gone alone in pursuit. When Bagley and Fawcett reached the bridge they stopped and recovered the loot cached under the approach before continuing. This delayed them to the extent that when they started again, Constable Ellis had almost overtaken them. Looking back they saw the head- lights of the pursuing car on a straight stretch of road.
