Student Union Bull By Aaron Mahoney During the January 16 Northern Undergraduate Student Society (NUGSS) board meeting, President Dr. Charles Jago notified the board that he would be ask- ing the Board of Governors to consider allocating land for a Student Union Building (SUB) at UNBC. NUGSS Director of University Affairs Moezine __Hasham said he.is very posi- tive that the Govemors will approve the request. Hasham said that President Jago told the board that the university had planned to build a classroom building behind the Wintergarden but will recommend to the Governors that it would be a good location for the SUB. “| had hoped that on the tenth anniversary of the uni- versity that a SUB building would be built,” said Hasham. “It might still happen.” News A Step Closer Hasham said that he is not sure if UNBC will require NUGSS to purchase the land, if it could be leased, or if it would be donated. Hasham “The building will have to follow UNBC guidelines in terms of design,” said Hasham. All directors were in atten- dance with the exception of Nedinska MacEachern Director of External Affairs. Speaker of the Board Rob MacEachern and Administrative Assistant Regan Gasbutt were also in attendance. The board reviewed and then adopted the January 9, 2002 minutes unchanged. Board received a presenta- tion from UNBC President Dr. Charles Jago concerning the allocating the of land for a Student Union Building. The board received a report from Finance Director Khumo Phake concerning a request for funding from the Women’s Centre for Jezebel’s Jam music festival on March 2. The board tabled the request pending more information. Director of # Campus Activities Melanie Morgan notified the board of a request from the International _ Studies office concerning a cost sharing proposal for an speaker. The board decided to table the request pending more information on the $1800 cost. Morgan stated that she has talked to UNBC concerning showing the Olympic Games on a big screen TV in a pub- lic area. Morgan brought to the board’s attention the winter olympics new name of Frostfest. Morgan also broached the topic of holding the next Backyard Barbeque at the Multiplex as opposed to UNBC to ‘avoid potential problems. Director of Internal Affairs Kelsey Dryden and CSM representative Imran Jessa agreed that moving the event to the Multiplex would be a bad idea. Russell told the board that EARS had been donated a transmitter and requested that the fund- ing allocated by NUGSS for the purchase of a transmitter be used in EARS general rev- enue. After removing Russell from the meeting, the board decided to table the funding request until EARS has pre- sented a budget to the board. The board received a pro- posal for converting the NUGSS webpage = from Microsoft Word documents to Adobe Acrobat PDF docu- ments. The board approved the proposal and approved the spending of $76. The board reviewed the current policy where NUGSS directors must resign if they are unable to maintain a min- imum grade point average. General Manager April Hawes notified the the board that the Registrar Office would be enforcing the acad- emic probation policy. The board received a request from a student for assistance with travel expenses to a conference at UVIC. The board approved spending of $100. The board reviewed new business concerning a venue for the upcoming Backyard Barbeque. Director Phake asked the board to consider a proposal to hire a consultant to collect informa- tion on the event. Director of University Affairs Moezine Hasham noti- fied the board that land for a Student Union Building will be discussed in the upcoming UNBC Board of Governors meeting and he is optimistic that land will be allocated. The board then closed the meeting to the public and went in-camera.
