The following is a news item which came out of the Health Minister’s office. HEALTH CARE CRISIS BLAMED ON ALCOHOL “Warning: The B.C. Health Minister has deter- . mined that alcohol drinking is injurious to your health.” That’s the sort of message that would appear on the label of your favorite poison if Health Min- ister Bob McClelland had his way. In a speech on September | 5th to a convention of industrial first aid attendants, McClelland warned that B.C.’s health care system is becom- ing overloaded and claimed much of the over- load is due to self-inflicted illness. McClelland said that, during his four years as health minister, he has been “‘appalled” at the “destructiveness of alcohol”. “It has struck me to the point where I am very much in danger of Beconune a fanatic on the sub ject,” he said. i (In an earlier press release announcing his mini- stry’s new $500,000 anti-drinking campaign, McClelland said he had personal, as well as on-the-job, experience as to the difficulty of go- ing on the wagon: “I recently stopped drinking and I know. only too well the pressure a non- drinker is subject to at a social gathering.’’) ~ McClelland said he was ‘‘very often tempted to take drastic measures to control’? alcohol con- sumption when he contemplated the true extent of damage that booze causes to the physical and mental health of citizens and to the social struc- ture. seta “I - would like to see our death certificates change so the cause of death is not listed as mal- nutrition, or cirrhosis, but booze,” he said. “I would like to see highway fatalities listed not as-accidental but caused by booze. * “T would like to see the reason for divorce and the break-up of families ascribed, not to incom- “I would like to see cued d ribed not as ‘suicide whilé of- unsound mind” but as ad EBICS: sion aggravated by booze.’ “I would like to slap a label on every bottle of booze sold proclaiming that alcohol can be in- jurious to your health.” McClelland claimed society must achieve a change in thinking about alcohol and other health hazards such as tobacco because “‘the enormous costs of providing health care are becoming pro- hibitive. “Our system is in danger of collapse if we persist in overloading it with health problems that are largely self-inflicted,” he said. ; MOTHERING BEFORE BIRTH DURING THIS SPECIAL TIME WHILE YOU’RE GIVING THE GREATEST GIFT OF ALL—LIFE, YOU PROBABLY KNOW HOW IMPORTANT NUTRITION IS FOR BOTH YOU AND YOUR UNBORN CHILD.
