The dance was performed as a proclamation of victory by the tribe which landed the fish. The Bone Game Song was derived from an original Indian gambling game in which two white and two black-striped bones were used. The Owl Dance was an exhibition dance used in various celebrations, and was “borrowed” from Indian tribes of the U.S., Chief Moon said. ARRIVE Hours Earty Nearly 50 Indian men, women, boys and girls from the Somenos, Quamichan, Comiaken, Clemclumuletz and Knipshon bands took part in the dances and sing- ing, and although the festival did not start until 2.30 in the afternoon, they were in their costumes with faces and bodies painted ready to perform by 11.30 in the morning. As the performers on the stage went through the frenzied dances to the beat of the tom-toms, Indians in the audience, from old wizened men to tiny dark-eyed tots, moved rhythmically in unison, and even the “pale faces” in the audience found it hard to keep their feet from tapping. Most of the performers wore feathered head-dress, and the varied coloured cos- tumes bore hundreds of bone and wood ornaments which rattled as the dancers moved. Only here and there did signs of modern times show up in the historic perform- ances such as when a dancer appeared in full Indian dress, except for a pair Back view of sweater.
