nspector Gammon Retires

.FTER THIRTY-EIGHT years of
sryice, Inspector Ernest Gammon _ is
saving the force he has so long and
aithfully served. He leaves many friends.
ll those who have served under him
ave nothing but praise and admiration
or the quiet, unassuming and sympa-
jetic officer who was friend and coun-
s|lor as well as commanding officer.

Although due to retire on August 31st,
947, Inspector Gammon was requested
) remain at his post till September 30th,
wing to the wave of arson which swept
ye Doukhobor settlements in the West
<ootenays, and the need for extra per-
onnel in that area.

In command of “C” Division of the
orce, which embraces the entire central
ortion of the province, Inspector Gam-
ion had his headquarters at Kamloops,
. C., since September Ist, 1945.

Joining the force as a constable in 1909,
e has served in many parts of the prov-
ice. Stationed at New Westminster in
909, he was transferred to Mission the
sllowing year. Two years later, in 1912,
e was promoted to senior constable and
sturned to New Westminster. The same
ear he received a further promotion to
ie rank of chief constable and was sent
) take charge of the Hazelton District
t a time when construction of the Grand
runk Pacific Railway made police work

nd general “riff-raff’” who preyed on the
mstruction workers. Chief Const. Gam-
1on gave them short shrift. He also took
art in several widely publicized cases,
ich as the famous Gun-a-noot Indian
ise, and the two Hazelton bank rob-
eries. In these cases two bandits were
1ot dead, while another died of wounds.

nd sentenced to twenty years imprison-

He also served at South Fort George
and at Prince Rupert, but in 1918 he was
transferred to Nelson, where he remained
for a number of years. Later, other
moves followed, and he was stationed at
Revelstoke, Cranbrook, Penticton, and
Prince George. In 1938 he returned to
Prince Rupert, after an absence of twenty
years, and took charge of Prince Rupert
District. Two years later he was appointed
to the Command of “D” Division of the
force, which includes the entire north-
west portion of the province, and was
promoted to the rank of sub-inspector.
The next year, in 1941, he was promoted
moted to the rank of full inspector.

Remaining at Prince Rupert till 1945,
he then assumed command of “C” Di-
vision.
