Overhauls and refitting are done during slack seasons, and other boats take over the work so that there will be no interruption in this very valu- able service. The boats are manned by qualified per- sonnel, the large boats having certificated skippers and engineers. The ranks, de- pending upon the size of the boat, the qualifications of the officer, and his length of service, vary from First Class Skipper, equivalent to Staff-Sergeant, to Third Class Skipper, equivalent to Corporal. In the same way, Engineer 1st Class is equivalent to a Sergeant, Engineer 2nd Class to Corporal, Engineer 3rd Class to Ist Class Constable, and Engineer 4th Class to 2nd Class Constable. Radio operators rank in the same way as other members of the Radio Branch. Many members of the marine section have had previous training either as deck or engine room officers, and after their enlistment in the Police, have taken additional train- ing in the work and duties of a police officer so that they may become fully proficient in their multifarious duties. In the early days of the Marine Section it was not necessary to have fully qualified officers on our boats, the usual knowledge possessed by the average fisherman being sufficient. But as time went on and the boats became larger, with additional duties to be performed, and frequently passengers to be carried, it was necessary to secure fully competent men in navi- gation and engine maintenance. This will be appreciated when one considers the value of a single boat may be anywhere between the value of ten to twenty-five automobiles, and no service stations to drop into for repairs.
