The Venomous shane Schepens | did not realize that Shane Schepens is one of the most fair and unbiased journalists working today until | read his masterpiece, “What Have Your Reps Being Doing??.” If there is some extra cash in the BANK OF SHANE, NUGSS (Northern Undergraduate Student Society) should establish a Noble Laureate of Journalism to recognize an exemplary journalist like Mr. Schepens. But first, let me point out some of the facts. | have to recognize that Mr. Schepens is one of the hardest working directors in the NUGSS office. | am confused some- times whether he is the Director of Finance and Operations, Director of University Affairs, or the Director of Media Affairs — he does a zillion things at the same time. But the fact is that his main function is to be responsible for finance, and there has been a lot of con- troversy regarding the finan- cial situation of NUGSS. For example, certain clubs head- ed by a NUGSS director and his friends have spent more than $500 on color photo- copy for an event that was designed to make profit. Did he point out this in his so- called “What Have Your Reps Being Doing??.” Does he hold the abusers responsible for their actions? The fact is that Mr. Schepens does not have the guts to do so. Furthermore, he does not have any policy in place to prevent such abuse. If he’d paid attention to his own duties instead of bossing other directors around, such abuse wouldn’t have hap- pened. NUGSS has provided fund- ing for the Directors of Internal and External Affairs, some of the newly elected members, and some other studenis to attend confer- ences in Ottawa, Vancouver, and San Francisco. | think this is the purpose of the Student Venture Grants, and | have nothing against it. But ironically, Mr. Schepens enthusiastically voted for some of the directors and their friends but did not vote for Emil Tarka and other per- sons whose faces were unfa- miliar to him. Is this what you mean by “fair minded,” Mr. Schepens? For a man who has prided himself on his ability to ‘equally represent all students,’ as you remarked to me in a nasty email in which you suggested that | either resign from NUGSS or con- form to your corrupt attitude, you have revealed yourself to be a hypocrite of the highest order. Furthermore, Mr. Schepens has misled his readers by providing the false informa- tion that A.J. Delisle has moved a motion forward for NUGSS to pay approximately $1000 for his university team’s hockey jerseys. In fact, he hasn’t moved this motion at all; he only intro- duced the idea to the board for consideration. As a busi- ness student, A.J. under- stands how to save more money for students and NUGSS in the long run. Instead of NUGSS funding $2500 to the team every year and each player paying near- ly $400, NUGSS could buy the team jerseys and rent them back to the players fora $100 income each semester. NUGSS can make money in this way, and all the money spent on the jerseys could be recuperated in five years. Since you are a business stu- dent, | wrongly assumed that you might know more about business than | do, Mr. Schepens! Instead of contin- ually pouring money out of the BANK OF SHANE, you might try pouring some back in. | am sure that A.J. Delisle knows how to do this, and it is unfortunate that he is not in the position of Director of Finance and Operations; he was on the Monetary Affairs Committee (MAC) under your command, but sadly, you kicked him out. It is also very sad that the students did not (continued on page 4) Opinion The “Sorority Whore”: An Insult to Women on a Different Level Yes! That “warm and fuzzy feeling” induced by the orga- nizations of UNBC that pro- mote awareness of women’s issues. I’m sure we all fell as equally touched and inspired as Joyce Roth when walking the halls of UNBC. However, including the UNBC Sorority on the list of these organiza- tions is laughable. | agree with Roth, labels such as “whore” and “slut” are incredibly degrading for women. | can’t tell you enough about the “warm and fuzzy feeling” | had after the Sorority President imposed them onto me. | joined the sorority because | wanted to get involved with functions at the university, as well as do some charity work. | also had the misconception that it “pro- moted women and women related issues.” However, the continuous slander and ill- natured motives of some sorority members became unbearable after this final degradation was made. So | wore this label, so kindly given to me, not because | have low self-esteem, but to make a statement about the moronic declaration made by people that would attempt to violate my integrity with such immature means. It seems the only charity work they do is to be each other's friends. Joyce Roth, instead of the intended audience, was offended by the message of my shirt. | am very sorry if my message offended anyone who misunderstood it. It is unfortunate that | received a personal attack by someone who was unaware of the situ- Sorority Response to “Sorority Whore” This is concerning the article “Sorority Whore” in the last issue of Over The Edge. | would just like to state that the girl who wore the shirt to Sergeant's is not presently a member of the UNBC sorori- ty. Sorority members who were at Srg’t’s that night and those that heard of it later UNBC Sorority Historian were shocked and disap- pointed concerning these events. The UNBC sorority has and will continue working on maintaining a positive image within the school and community. Sarah Petersen ation. Maybe if she had approached me, in what | assumed would have been a civilized manner, | could have explained this to her. She would have realized that my message was not an attack on women, but a defense against the unjust stereo- types imposed onto them. Once again | apologize to those, and only those, who lacked knowledge of my situ- ation and may have been offended. | hope this clarifies any misconception, especial- ly those that result in inaccu- rate newspaper letters. To me, these judgmental ways of thinking and acting are “immature”, “lacking in good taste” and “promote a Stone Age mentality.” Sorority Whore For the sorority Cartoon Feature “Sorority Abhorred” see Page 9 and15
